I had an employee who came to work with the biggest smile on their face, but you could tell something was off. In our first meeting they sat in the corner, you could tell there was something more important on their mind. And there was… I checked in after the meeting and learned they’d been given a medical diagnosis that would totally change their life. I encouraged them to take the rest of the day off, and with a sigh of relief, they did. Leaders, consider this a friendly reminder. Don’t make assumptions based off initial perceptions, hunches, or feelings. Don’t “see only what you want to see” Go deeper because you care - about your people and your business. It’s your job to look under the surface.
