Change is hard! Change surrounding Customer Success is no different. For many people within my network, recent change has come by way of layoffs, exploration of different opportunities and/or finding new ways to drive value within their organization. It’s been a while since I’ve seen Customer Success roles being listed and 8hrs later, over 100 applicants have applied. Change in all forms is upon us. Whether it’s the ways AI will aide practitioners in supporting clients in a customer lifecycle, or the perfecting of new Customer Success iterations that will solidify their value for decades to come. Change is here and it's hard!! With that said, it’s the holidays. Enjoy your family, friends and loved ones. Revel in the quietness that only this time of the year can provide. As you close out 2023, begin thinking how you can be better in 2024 and also how you can help others reach their goals. All change isn’t bad, perspective is everything. Remember.. I built my CS career ignoring even the existence of metrics or reports. When I first started building the customer support team at lempire, it was just me, wearing multiple hats and juggling responsibilities. Surprisingly, despite being a one-woman show, we received so many glowing reviews for our customer support. But here's the thing: I had no idea what our metrics looked like back then. Why? Because I wasn't tracking them - I didn't have reports. I didn't even know what metrics are relevant for CS. I was new to running a full CS team, and to be honest, numbers were not one of my concerns at that point. My focus was singular: helping people. Jumping from tickets to calls constantly, not just serving as a product expert, but as someone who genuinely cared. I was providing unexpected value—offering revisions, campaign advice etc., even when no one asked for it. That’s what truly elevated my role in customer support, as well as my knowledge and skills. What I learned; 👉 Caring beats metrics: Initially, my focus wasn’t on numbers but on people and that made all the difference. 👉 Surprise and delight: Going the extra mile—like offering advice or revisions—builds trust and loyalty. 👉 Customer-first mindset: In the end, you are helping people build a business, hence you are helping them feed their families. You are impacting far more, than what is visible. Now, my role has evolved, and so has my team. We’ve grown to a 15-person CS powerhouse, handling many more clients and products. Naturally, my own goals have shifted with my role, and yes, I do rely on metrics and reports now. But here’s the advice I give to my team and all the reps out there: 💎 Don't focus on the metrics—focus on helping. It’s my job to track the numbers; their job is to go the extra mile for customers and only care about assisting the user. I handle the rest and take on myself all the other concerns. I attended a virtual meetup and got the chance to connect with some incredible people from the Tidbits Customer Success community. Beyond work hours 🕥 While building professional relationships, understanding people’s lives beyond their workplace has always been a priority for me. It's the first thing I focus on in a new job or when welcoming someone new to the team. This approach has consistently: ✔️ Improved relatability ✔️ Helped find common interests ✔️ Deepened my understanding of my colleagues' thoughts, behaviors, and priorities thereby positively impacting our working relationships. Today, we extended this philosophy in the Tidbits community catch up to our Customer Success counterparts from various industries. We learned about the people behind the roles and how their principles shape their work. A key outcome of this event was fostering an environment where it's easier to ask for help, offer support, and collaborate effectively. 🌟📖 Customer Success Story Time 📖🌟 I've been doing some reflection lately, and I wanted to share a pivotal moment from my teaching days that's been on my mind. It's a story about facing challenges head-on and finding creative solutions—something I believe is fundamental in any role, including customer success. During my first year of teaching, I encountered a hurdle that caught me off guard—dealing with unhappy parents. It was a curveball I wasn't quite prepared for, despite all my college courses and student teaching experiences. But one particular piece of feedback really stuck with me: a student needed more of a challenge. He was breezing through the curriculum without breaking a sweat. Now, any teacher will tell you that the solution is differentiation—tailoring instruction to meet each student's needs. And I did just that. I dug through the curriculum, researched the web, and scoured the shelves of Barnes and Noble for additional material. But for this student, it wasn't enough. I knew he needed something more. But with no gifted program at our small school, I had to get creative. So, I started an after-school enrichment club. It wasn't just about that one student, though. I saw another student in my class who could benefit from it, as well as one from my partner teacher's class. It was a small group, but it made a big impact. And you know what? Their parents noticed. They appreciated the extra effort, and those students went on to exceed expectations on their state assessments that year. Now, as I look to transition into a customer success role, I can't help but see the parallels. Both require thinking outside the box, finding solutions to unexpected challenges, and building strong relationships. And I'm excited about the opportunity to bring that same passion and creativity to a new field. As the holidays are coming to an end, and a new year approaches; I reflect on my nearing 21 year journey in the CX industry. I have worked through numerous acquision attempts, and layoffs to know that job security isn't always guaranteed. In this climate it is often hard to find someone that has worked at a company for 10-20 years unless they were there during the startup stages. I have been searching for that place where my efforts to show how invaluable the Customer Experience is, and supporting said experience determines how well a company will do financially. The customer wants to be heard. The support staff are the front lines and receives the message. That message is passed along to higher ups for consideration to work on those changes. That message is sorted by level of importance based on what negatively impacts the opportunity for income. The more people are impacted, the higher the need to fix what is broken. I have encountered many instances where nothing changes until they see the data of the negative impact. Often times that data doesn't have a voice or a "why" to it, which is where the CX team comes in and provides that voice. I am proud to have provided that voice throughout the years, and hopefully the first quarter of next year, I can continue to do so as a CX Mananager or something more senior.

2019, people claimed Customer Success needed a name change ⚰️. 2020, was the end of Customer Success ⚰️. So was 2021, and 2022 ⚰️. And now again in 2023, I'm seeing posts pop up wondering if CS is dead soon ⚰️. I know it's the end of the year BUT STOP IT. It's not helpful. Let's pretend we've learned something this year, saw the trends, and actually DO know where we're heading. Yes there have been layoffs, yes there are now different (more commercial) expectations of a CSM. Yes, change is challenging. But change is not death.
