Why Did Special Dividends Die Out? "Some people believe that special dividends died out as rule changes allowed firms to repurchase stock more easily, and repurchase activity took the place of special dividends. While this may have played a small role, special dividends were already declining before share repurchase activity started growing in the 1980s. Others believe that as institutional investors (mutual funds, hedge funds, pensions, etc.) came to own more shares than individual investors, institutional investors favored more regular, consistent dividends over less predictable special dividends. While there is limited evidence to suggest a definitive conclusion as to why special dividends died out, I can appreciate the logic behind this latter view." ~David Giroux, Capital Allocation

I have been following Altruist and it's CEO Jason Wenk almost since it's conception. Marc Greenberg joined at more than an intriguing time. He joined at what I believe to be the dip just before the hockey stick of growth. An amazing and exciting time to join. Once the improvements cited are made, this new custodial platform opens its doors to many opportunities to expand its service partnerships. Marc has an opportunity to build a monster. An enviable opportunity for any CFO. Incumbent custodians Charles Schwab BNY Mellon | Pershing Fidelity Investments are lumbering giant cargo ships requiring great power and wide berth to change course. Altruist is nimble. Notice I didn't say small. Steve Jobs said you are only as small as you think you are so think huge which is something Jason has always done. And think about what they have accomplished with less than $180MM to this point. It's nothing less than incredible. With the recent series D $112MM added, that can really run hard. Building a modern custodial platform for a total $290MM invested would have been impossible ten years ago.
