In 2019, NASA’s Science Mission Directorate (SMD) released a report based on a series of interviews with scientists that made it clear those scientists needed a centralized search capability to help them find the data they needed. The SMD’s mission is to engage with the US science community, sponsor scientific research, and use aircraft, balloon, and spaceflight programs for investigations in Earth orbit, in the Solar System, and beyond. Recognizing that giving scientists and researchers access to its data was fundamental to its purpose, SMD developed its Open Source Science Initiative (OSSI) as a result of that report in an effort to make publicly funded scientific research transparent, inclusive, accessible, and reproducible. The mission of the OSSI: a commitment to the open sharing of software, data, and knowledge (including algorithms, papers, documents, and ancillary information) as early as possible in the scientific process. “It really came from the scientists and scientific community, and it also aligns with our broader SMD priority of enabling interdisciplinary science,” Bugbee says. “That’s where new discoveries are made.” To facilitate that mission, the agency is now turning to a combination of neural nets and generative AI to put those vast amounts of data at scientists’ fingertips.

This past 2-3 May 2024, we held our third workshop on space exploration and Free Open Source Software — a tradition that commenced during the pandemic with an all-day series of online talks. As in the past, we were able to count on the spectacularly energetic participation of Mr. Jay Trimble, Mission System Manager VIPER Lunar Rover (https://lnkd.in/d6J-p4mi) NASA Ames Research Center in Silicon Valley, California, present in person. This year, our schedule opened on 2 May, with our students presenting status reports on their theses and ongoing projects, followed by a conversation with Jay in the role of space mission proposal Referee. This opportunity was absolutely precious for my students to grow in their understanding of their own aims and goals, as well as with their communication skills while under “friendly,” but highly qualified, pressure. After a few words by me, Mr. Trimble presented a historic and inspiring plenary talk entitled “The VIPER Lunar mission and Open MCT.” In the afternoon, Mr. Jay Trimble offered a highly focused training session on the remarkable Open MCT (https://lnkd.in/dpQ8ja6r), sharing the stage with Mr. Andrew Henry, Technical Lead, NASA Ames Research Center, who joined us with his unparalleled knowledge at 06:00 AM Pacific via Zoom connection from California. (Ege University), and I look forward to future editions of this unique event on space exploration and Free Open Source Software applied to space exploration.
