Some have probably seen the announcement about Yoodo’s cessation as a brand by the end of August 2024 (as for its mobile services, that will be addressed in due time). I didn’t get around to posting about this earlier; as you can guess, there were many things going on. Plus it’s probably not the best to post when everyone’s emotions are still high at that time. It’s a decision that had been made and now is not the time to delve into these details. There will be more time to reflect and pen some thoughts in the many months ahead but for now, a quick commentary on the incredible journey we’ve had together and the impact we’ve made. Over the years, Yoodo has been more than just a company; it has been a community of passionate individuals who believed in the power of choice and customisation in the mobile space. Our customers have always been at the heart of everything we do, and the overwhelming reactions and feedback we’ve received in light of this announcement are a testament to the impact Yoodo has made. We had 1k plus comments on our Facebook post (https://lnkd.in/gaC_NGNd). So many kind words from our customers although they themselves are worried about the future of their mobile line. I’ve received many personal messages too. It has been truly overwhelming and deeply touching. I am immensely proud of what the Yoodo team (current and past) has accomplished. From innovative solutions, different approaches to how we market ourselves to exceptional customer service and high mobile app scores, we’ve strived to set new standards in the industry. Besides the digital telco aspect, we can lay claim to being the strongest supporter of Malaysian esports, nurturing the gaming industry in Malaysia. We’re also probably one of the few telcos in the world that can claim that in the last few months, >46% of our monthly new activations are via esim (vs physical sim). The milestones and connections we’ve fostered have been truly remarkable. As we navigate through this transition, the priority remains our customers and partners. We are committed to making this process as seamless as possible and ensuring that all your needs are addressed. So hang in there. Thank you for being a vital part of the Yoodo journey !

I was very fortunate to be part of how Yoodo started out. It was when the mothership wanted to “digitize” its business (around late 2016) hence why Yoodo, the digital telco was created. Was approached by Farid Yunus, one of the C Suites in Celcom then, and always thankful to be given the opportunity. It started from scratch, nothing, zilch. We deep dived into customer pain points. How consumers always wanted more variety/options to their mobile plan, and in the new digital world, people wanted things now and instant. I recall building the app journey with the team, “Do we get everyone to login before ordering a SIM? Or do we get them to do that later? Do they get to choose a number now? Or when they activate? How do we get the SIM to them instantly? They can’t wait for 3-7 working days”. That sorta thing, and I recall connecting with Francesca Chia of GoGet.my and somehow we made it work, people could get their SIMs within 2 hours. Naming it was hilarious but of course a fun process. So many debates, conversations with Danny Gnaniah and everyone. We talked about it being called “Nudo” because we’re transparent, naked, nude, Nudo…..dude…… 🤣. Then there was also a shout to call it “Hoo-Haa”….dude, let’s not go there (Don’t ask me why and who)….. like I said, fun/hilarious process. And once we launched, the rollercoaster started but we still managed to do loads of fun stuff, including being part of Malaysia’s first Premier Futsal League. Roshan Bose was a true Kaki Bola. Again, super glad to have had the opportunity to build this digital telco since it’s early days, I would have done it all over again. But for now…. Farewell Yoodo. In 2017, there were only a handful of API integrated platforms offering next-hour delivery experiences (beyond pizza delivery). The cakes and flower delivery guys were still on manual postings. When your team approached us, we were thrilled and honored to partner. I remember thinking how forward-thinking it was. You envisioned a model without stores, relying on pick-up points and the nearest available person to deliver within the SLA. This innovative approach didn't come from a small, agile SME, but from a brand under a major corporation. Yoodo was able to become a fully digital telco with distributed pick-up points and a two-hour delivery service, leveraging an on-demand, distributed workforce without hiring full-time employees for the delivery. It was the "blended workforce" strategy that's widely discussed today, seamlessly integrating 'borrowed', 'bought', and 'built' functions into your operations. It will always hold a special place in GoGet's journey. It's been a privilege.
