In our ASIST #programmes, we focus on 21st Century Skills across #schools. The #world is ever evolving, and at an unprecedented pace. However, in a country like #India, rich with #tradition, #diversity and a variety of #cultures, we also believe in synthesising older #customs with the new. This year, Dr. Pramila Kudva helped us examine the ways in which the National Curriculum Framework of India uses many ancient #Indian thoughts as #foundation. "The NEP has highlighted a few relevant ancient Indian #concepts prevalent in the #teaching #learning process," she explains, "The concepts were connected to the modern #techniques of teaching. Six Pramanas were linked to Kolbe’s experiential learning module. It makes me happy to share these ideas so we can appreciate the richness of Ancient Indian #system of #education and relate it to Kolbe’s cycle. Importance of questioning was established through #stories. Panchadi, the 5 step learning #process was analysed briefly. Educational #implications were pointed out."

I'm about to start my 7th batch on the 10th of Feb. These will be held every Saturday and Sunday from 8am to 9:30am India time. However, its message on some of these common management concepts are really hard-hitting and very relevant to all times: 1. Losing our life purpose, कश्मलम् 2. On chickening out from the competition, क्लैब्य 3. On desiring greatness, आरुरुक्षुः 4. About capability, योगबल 5. On the sciences behind these, गुह्यतम शास्त्र and there are countless more: from behavioral patterns for a successful life to methodology of problem solving, Gita tends to provide answers to many aspects of our life learnings. This course is ideal for those of us who can speak any one Bharatiya language! The format is designed to equip ourselves well for our own swadhyaya of scriptures. Gita is just the beginning - from both getting a decent grip over Sanskrit & it's grammar and also from getting ourselves a bit acquainted with other scriptures such as Upanishads, Itihasas & Puranas. We will have many chanting sessions until we start locating words in the verses through our Bharatiya vernacular languages. We would want Gita to teach us itself before glossing over some known Bhashyas, where necessary. There will be new things we will always discover during the class. That's His grace. research is fundamental to the development of a society. It is all about knowing the unknown. Research is no less than finding God. A society that embraces research attitude gradually leads itself to the path of serenity, while a society that is still dependent on the knowledge of its forefathers without upgrading it in relevance to present times, ultimately gets degraded, no matter how old it is. In short, I mean that India has a huge repository of knowledge in the form of Vedas, Shrimad Bhagavad Gita, vast addressings of great people like Swami Dayanand Saraswati, Adi Shankaracharya. Earlier we used to have similar kinds of institutions where open research was being conducted. Either we should start researching in that path or stop giving statements like India has huge knowledge. Recently there has been a buzz about the Nalanda campus being inaugurated by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. I would like to add that- place does not matter, they were the scientists that made Nalanda great, it's like an illusionary sticker under the tag Nalanda and has nothing to do with progress of India. ELOQUENT SILENCE, SOCIOEMOTIONAL LEARNING, and SHANKAR NAG Socio-emotional learning (SEL), even before it was used in the Indian school education space, never had a more impassioned votary than R K Narayan. Prof Krishna Kumar narrated the origins of the publication of the Yashpal committee's report that celebrates its 30th anniversary. Narayan's Swami had his debut in the 1935 book 'Swami and Friends'. Shankar Nag 'birthed' Swami onto the telescreen in 1986, a good 51 years after the book's debut. This time, Narayan's words were brilliantly matched by his brother R K Laxman's illustrations and Carnatic musician L Vaidyanathan's haunting alaap of 'Ta na na tana nana na'. Among the stalwarts of theatre one child, master Manjunath, who played Swami, became the nation's darling overnight. A non-descript Agumbe village in Shimoga district of Karnataka became the fictional town Malgudi. One generation or more Indians have related to Swami's struggles and joys. It was still not enough for the national conscience to realize the sheer weight of the baggage that children are carrying. It was Narayan's stirring speech in the Rajya Sabha that green-signaled the report on 'Learning without Burden'. As we reflect on how much the burden has 'diminished, increased or mutated', here's a 140-second Chaplinesque clip of eloquent silence that spoke a lot more about #empathy, #sensitivity, #care, #socialawareness, and #coexistence.
