📣 A project to develop wind propulsion technology has received funding from the Department for Transport (DfT), United Kingdom Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition Round 4. 🚢 💰     The project, which sees the Catapult working alongside ANEMOI, Frazer-Nash Consultancy, Stehr Consulting Ltd, Lloyd's Register and Victoria Steamship Co. Ltd., aims to revolutionise wind propulsion technology by developing a novel 24.5-meter tall, 3.5-meter diameter Rotor Sail design.     Connected Places Catapult will play a pivotal role by undertaking comprehensive market research to quantify the UK, European, and transatlantic market potential for the new Rotor Sail. Alongside technical support from Frazer-Nash, we will conduct supply chain research to identify specific UK companies with the requisite capabilities and infrastructure for manufacturing, assembly, and commissioning of Rotor Sails and installation onto vessels. The study will also explore the combination of Rotor Sails and future fuels, providing critical evidence of Rotor Sail technology's pivotal role in enabling net-zero shipping without compromising productivity.     This project is part of the Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition Round 4 (CMDC4), funded by the UK Department for Transport (DfT) and delivered by Innovate UK. Another "deep" milestone reached at Hydromea: our deep-rated DISKDRIVE thrusters have gone through a pressure test in a German certification lab Nautilus where they were subjected to 600 bar pressure and they worked through the "descend" without a hiccup, starting and stopping every 50 bar. This puts DISKDRIVE thrusters in the rare league of thrusters that can operate at a 6km oceanic depth. This is another proof of the ingenuity of the Hydromea technology. Together with LUMA modems that were recently tested to 1'200 bar pressure, we are redefining subsea equipment manufacturing by making products that are ocean-depth proof in an extremely small form factor and at a fraction of price that what typical high-depth technology would cost today. Making smaller and more affordable subsea technology helps democratise access to this largely unexplored part of our planet. #subseaengineering #thrusters #innovation

New partnership to decarbonize maritime sector through ammonia deployment U.S.-based ammonia power solutions company Amogy has entered a partnership with shipbuilding major Hanwha Ocean and aerospace industrial company Hanwha Aerospace, both affiliates of South Korean Hanwha Group, to accelerate the decarbonization of the maritime industry through the deployment of Amogy’s zero-emission ammonia-to-power technology for ammonia-powered vessels. According to Amogy, its ammonia-to-electrical power system splits liquid ammonia into its base elements of hydrogen and nitrogen, which then funnels the hydrogen into a fuel cell, generating high-performance power at five times the energy density of lithium batteries. The company was awarded a feasibility statement by Lloyd’s Register (LR) in February 2024 as the official approval of its technology qualification plan (TQP), marking a new milestone in certifying that Amogy’s technology is viable for maritime applications. In 2024, Amogy formed several ammonia technology-related partnerships, with the most recent one being with Japan-based trading and import/export company ITOCHU Corporation to explore the potential application of Amogy’s technology on ITOCHU’s maritime vessels. https://lnkd.in/ewK28CN9

This novel floating Gyro Turbine uses the mass inertia caused by gyro forces to stabilize the turbine around the vertical axis of rotation. Coaxial and concentric to the axis of rotation, the hub of a horizontal spoked wheel is connected seventy meters above sea level to a rod-shaped buoy, the lower end of which forms a ballast body. The clockwise rotating upper rotor has a diameter of 300 meters and is conceived as a spoked wheel with an outer rim. A total of 10 rotor blades are arranged parallel to the axis of rotation and are cantilevered from the rim on both sides fifty meters upward and downward. Supporting and tension cables stabilize the rotor as radial spokes and, together with the hub and rim, form a lightweight structure that meets the Buckminster Fuller tensegrity structure criteria. The lower, counter clockwise rotating rotor is conceived as a water turbine with a smaller diameter to compensate precession of the upper gyro. The water turbine is driven by tidal current or by flowing water. The peak power of both turbines sums up to more than 50 MW, so that one buoy can replace seven of today's most powerful floating offshore wind turbines.
