#LawyerTalk What is most important to you when you recruit someone for your team? Is it the candidate's the skillset or attitude, or both? I was recently advising a client on a potentially problematic team member, and this got me thinking - for me, it is a clear 50:50. A candidate may be great at their work, but if they are in it just for the money, or if this is just another job for them, or they lack passion towards their work and organisition-building, it is a clear NO for me. I would hate to work with someone whom I cannot trust! One may be able to fake their way through interview questions, but can't fool your instinct. And when it comes to picking my team, I trust my gut! What's your mantra for picking your team members or hiring? #LawyerTalk Beware of #thugclients - the ones who claim they have "urgent" work, so you put everything aside, deliver the work to them within a few hours, and then poof! When it comes to paying your professional fees, they have taken your intellectual work and vanished into thin air! Suddenly, all kinds of reasons come up - right from 'we are too busy to answer your reminder calls' to 'we don't have the funds right now' to even trying to find faults with your work, in an attempt to not pay. I am not usually one to speak of unpleasant professional experiences on public platforms, but a few recent incidents have made me lose my patience with thug clients! They have zero respect for your professional services and are looking to get free legal advice, on an 'urgent' basis. I finally dealt with one such thug client in the same manner that I would have helped my client deal with their non-paying client. And guess what, within one hour, they suddenly had the funds to pay up! I would hate to have to deal with clients in this manner, as we have friendly relations with all of them. However, this one particular client left me with no choice, and also made me feel that sometimes in life, niceness has no value. What's been your experience as a professional in getting paid the fees you rightfully deserve, and that your client was very much aware of before you even got into an engagement?

But litigation is like stepping onto the legal playing field, where courtroom dramas unfold like a high-stakes game. So, you need to pick your play wisely to avoid getting sidelined! Although I don't believe in Father's Day, Mother's Day, and such other days that greeting card companies have created for us, nevertheless today is a good day to reflect about some life lessons that I have learned from my father, which are immensely valuable to me: 1. Have fun when you are having fun, and work when you are working: My father always tells me, focus 100% on whatever you are doing at the moment. When you are working don't think about fun, and when you are off-work don't think about work. This is one of my favourite lessons I guess, and I personally make sure I focus equally on my fun as I do on my work. 2. Patience is the best virtue: I have seen my father handle all kinds of people, kind, rude, arrogant, impatient... and no matter how the person in front of him is, his attitude never changes. He will always treat the other person with respect and talk to them patiently. It is his patience that has helped him win over some of the toughest people I've ever met! 3. Resilience saves you in tough times: Ups and downs are a given in everyone's life. Not even #ShahRukhKhan is immune from life's pitfalls! What helps you when things are not going your way, is to stay resilient. Work with the situation, trust that this is not permanent and things will change, and be patient to let time do its magic. There are life lessons to be learned from everyone around us, and more importantly from our parents. We just have to keep our eyes and ears open, and observe!
