Yesterday saw the launch of the RSSB's Sustainable Rail Blueprint, made possible by hard work and collaboration across the industry. Rail Partners' Mark Gaynor, director of our Operator Services team and chair of the RSSB's Decarbonisation Working Group warmly welcomed its publication, and emphasised the importance of implementation in delivering a sustainable railway. Mark said: ‘The publication of the #RSSB's Sustainable Rail Blueprint is the culmination of a significant industry collaboration which sets out a new framework for running a more sustainable network. ‘The railway can’t afford to be complacent about sustainability and if we want to attract more #passengers and #freight customers, we have to ensure we keep up with other modes of transport, who are decarbonising at pace. ‘The Blueprint is not just about carbon, it’s rightly about the railway’s wider impact on society, the economy and the environment. Buses offer reliable and convenient travel, empowering people to move freely within their communities without relying on cars. However, barriers like complex routes, poor service coordination, and multiple brands can sometimes deter bus use. Building on the previous government’s Bus Back Better strategy, the new Government’s Better Buses Bill aims to enhance local networks, supported by the largest investment in bus services in a generation. At Arup, we’re proud to assist the Department for Transport (DfT), United Kingdom with the BSIP Programme, addressing these barriers and seeing tangible benefits unfold. #Rail is the least polluting mode of transport and the sector is sustainable, especially compared to other industries. But can we do more?   In a new project initiated by the UIC - International union of railways #UICrail#UICrail, project participants are exploring how zero waste can be integrated into the #railway sector. The ZEROWASTE II project aims to promote circular economy principles in the railway sector. It runs for 36 months from January 2024 and builds on the Zero Waste Railways workshops and the REUSE project. Key objectives include reducing material #footprint and #greenhouse gas emissions, supporting EU Green Deal commitments and improving cross-sector collaboration. The project includes workshops and webinars to share best practice. Key members include NMBS-SNCB (Société Nationale des Chemins de fer Belges), Ns Nederlandse Spoorwegen, ProRail, Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane S.p.A., Trafikverket and SBB CFF FFS.
