I was on the ground working to manage the recovery operations of the 2020 fires in Northern California. Three days after my deployment began, so did the 2021 Dixie Fire. I cannot stress the importance of early detection and fire suppression.
Most people that interact with fire fighters see the typical ladder/engine/paramedic teams in any town. They don’t realize there are two different types of fire response.
Wildfire growth is currently countered by containment, which is a slow and often costly method which could determine your neighbor’s house is easier to save than your own.
Unfortunately, this method is the current “way to do things” because of continuous depletion of manual resources to fight that fire and extreme terrain.
With time, innovation, and yes investment; we will shift our response paradigm into actually “fighting” wildfires within minutes of them starting, no matter how remote.
