World COPD Day As a company, AstraZeneca aim's to elevate COPD as a public health priority.  Currently, COPD is Irelands 4th biggest killer and approx. 380,000 people are currently living with COPD.  COPD is often under-prioritised, underfunded and undertreated. There is a need for greater recognition of the impact of COPD on individuals and society to ensure people living with this disease receive the care they need and deserve. This is why we have our #SpeakUpForCOPD campaign which aims to raise public awareness and drive policy change to alleviate burden that COPD places on patients, societies, and healthcare systems around the globe.  What can you do to #SpeakUpForCOPD? #WorldCOPDDay

The international analysis of World Health Organization datas from 1995 to 2017 highlights falling death rates in many countries due to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), mainly due to the measures such as tobacco control policies and reduced poverty. Tobacco smoke is the main risk factor for COPD. About 40-50% of lifelong smokers will develop COPD, compared with 10% of people who have never smoked. While the study shows an encouraging decline in overall COPD death rates for both men and women, there is an overall rise in total COPD deaths which can be attributed to population growth, aging and air pollution. Accurate measurements of COPD prevalence and progression are crucial for effective public health strategies. Spirometers, particularly those equipped with ultrasonic technology, play a pivotal role in providing precise and timely data. These devices, by utilizing advanced ultrasonic sensors, enhance the accuracy of respiratory measurements, offering a more reliable assessment of lung function. This technological advancement is paramount in early detection, diagnosis, and management of COPD, enabling healthcare professionals to act promptly and improve treatment outcomes. In sept 2023 a group of friends did meet in Stresa (IT) to discuss the role and importance of physical (in-)activity and physical fitness in lung disease. Ideas were shared on how these important outcomes could be improved in patients.
