African Wildlife Foundation’s Post

In partnership with JUREC, the African Wildlife Foundation recently hosted a significant workshop to unite key stakeholders engaged in the project “Combating illegal trade in wildlife products in the DRC.” The workshop focused on highlighting the project’s progress to the CITES Management Authority, specifically establishing and functioning a specialized task force at N'djili International Airport and the Port of Matadi. This task force brings together five major law enforcement agencies to tackle the #illegalwildlifetrade, an issue that continues to threaten #biodiversity and undermine #conservation efforts. The workshop also served as a platform for stakeholders to discuss practical steps to address the recommendations of the CITES standing committee. One of the critical outcomes was the establishment of stronger coordination mechanisms between law enforcement agencies and specialized services within the ICCN( Institut Congolais pour la Conservation de la Nature), including the CITES Management Authority and the ICCN OPJ team. Funded by the US State Department's Bureau of International Narcotics Control and Law Enforcement (INL), the project has already identified 150 key stakeholders across five law enforcement agencies—Régie des Voies Aériennes (RVA), Direction Générale des Douanes et Accises (DGDA), Office Congolais de Contrôle (OCC), Direction Générale des Migrations (DGM), and Office Nationale des Transports (ONATRA/SCTP). This coordinated effort represents a crucial step in strengthening the capacity of the DRC to combat wildlife crime and ensure the long-term protection of its natural heritage. #Africanconservation #Africanleadership Facheux T.
