Today we recognize the 2 year anniversary of the 988 Lifeline, the three-digit code that replaced the former 10-digit number for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. Since its launch, the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline has experienced an increase in use. States like Arizona offer 24/7 mobile crisis teams. Our CEO, Robert Gebbia, spoke with PBS about how Arizona has become a leading model for crisis care.

Suicide is a leading cause of death in the United States, but it can be prevented. Each year from January to May, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) chapters host State Capitol Day events across the country to provide the organization’s over 50,000 Volunteer Advocates an opportunity to meet directly with public officials and impact suicide prevention legislation and policies in their home state. Two of this year’s top policy priorities include securing permanent, sustainable funding for state 988 crisis services systems and increasing lethal means safety.

Today as we kick off EMS week we focus on the health (physical, mental, emotional and spiritual) and wellbeing of our workforce. We have a lot of room to improve from violence prevention to access to mental health resources and reduction of stigma around mental health and help seeking. However today I want you to focus on how much progress we have made. There are great educational resources for mental health and resilience. Nationally there are open conversations about help seeking, mental health, resilience and burn out. We are shifting from a culture that eats it’s young… the suck it up buttercup… you will be broken that’s what happens culture to one that proactively seeks to have a way for EMS clinicians not to survive a career but actually thrive. We can and are doing better. A paramedic had the opportunity to contribute to the new national suicide prevention strategy. We are critical responders to suicide attempts and are repeatedly exposed to patient and peer suicides. This is part of our increased risk but also an opportunity to improve our education, response and prevention for our workforce and community. A bad day for someone who has fled domestic violence is a relentless barrage of emotions — fear, anxiety, sadness, and despair. The overwhelming weight of trauma can feel suffocating. That's why we work with people like Martha Burling from Imatter Health and Wellbeing Support CIC, providing a lifeline to survivors of domestic violence and other complex issues. Providing essential supplies such as clothing, toiletries, bedding, and more to those who have escaped dangerous situations is about more than just meeting immediate needs - it's about restoring dignity, stability, and hope to individuals who have been through unimaginable trauma. For many of us, these items may seem ordinary, perhaps even taken for granted in our daily lives. But for someone who is rebuilding their life from scratch they can help reclaim a sense of agency and self-assurance as they navigate the journey of healing and recovery.
