After the murder of George Floyd on May 25, 2020, CCMH staff, advisors, and 700+ counseling center members began exploring how to capture student experiences of discrimination when they seek treatment at college counseling centers. After a year of consulting, researching, and piloting, CCMH officially added a question to our standardized questions in 2021 that captured experiences of discrimination from the student’s perspective.   Over 700 college counseling centers across the country contributed to the development of this important question, hundreds of centers began using the item on their intake forms, and 85 centers who used the item contributed their de-identified client data to CCMH for research purposes.   The 85 centers using the discrimination item contributed data on 78,432 clients nationally ❗   The 2023 Annual Report used this data to examine the link between experiences of discrimination and mental health in students receiving treatment at college counseling centers, and findings are that students who reported discrimination were substantially more likely to experience a host of serious mental health symptoms which underscores the value of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) initiatives at institutions.   CCMH is currently a practice-research-network of 800+ college counseling centers across the country. It was a collective effort to create this question, gather data, analyze the data, and draw conclusions.   These important findings would not be possible without the 85 centers nationally who gathered this data and contributed it to CCMH for research.   This is the value and power of a being actively engaged in CCMH. While each counseling center is operating independently, we’ve come together to support college students in a very meaningful way.   What is the benefit of being a CCMH member? This! ☝ The opportunity to be a part of something greater that is only possible when we all work together. Recent findings in the 2023 Center for Collegiate Mental Health (CCMH) at Penn State Report, highlight that counseling centers are effectively supporting students facing discrimination. However, the data also underscores a sobering reality: despite the progress made during treatment, students reporting discrimination often conclude their sessions with higher levels of distress. 😔 These findings underscore the indispensable role college counseling centers play in advancing Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) goals across campuses. 🔍 The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Association (SAMHSA) defines trauma as experiences that are physically or emotionally harmful, leading to long-lasting adverse effects on an individual's well-being. Trauma can severely impact a student's ability to learn, manifesting as difficulty focusing, retaining information, missing classes, and anxiety. A trauma-informed pedagogical approach prioritizes recognizing these signs among students. Notably, the COVID-19 pandemic has disproportionately affected African American, Latinx, Indigenous communities, Pell recipients, and those with children.
