Cleveland port secures $32M for upgrades, modernization projects. The Port of #Cleveland recently received $32 million in federal and state grants that it will utilize to modernize the port’s largest #warehouse and upgrade electrical infrastructure at its general #cargo terminal. William Friedman, the port’s president and CEO, said the investments were critical to the port’s continuing operations, as well as sustainability. The grants include $27.2 million from the U.S. Department of #Transportation and $4.9 million from the #Ohio Department of Transportation’s Maritime Assistance Program. The funds will be used for modernizing the port’s Warehouse A, which is over 50 years old. The upgrades include adding structural steel repairs, a new overhead crane, window replacements, new concrete slab, updated lighting and a new roof. Funds will also be employed to develop an electrification master plan and installation of a new #terminal electric feed at the port, in collaboration with Cleveland Public Power. The latest funds are part of more than $93 million invested in the port’s #infrastructure since 2015, with more than 75% of it covered by state and federal grants. The goal is to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, making Cleveland the first Great Lakes port to adopt such an ambitious plan.

The project, spearheaded by Brightline Holdings LLC, is anticipated to create a 218-mile stretch along the Interstate I-15 corridor, linking these two major cities. While there’s no specified start date for construction, the goal of having trains running in time for the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles is an ambitious and exciting target. With the necessary paperwork and planning completed, including environmental impact assessments and union labor contracts, the project seems poised to move forward after facing various challenges since its initial proposal in 2001. The Brightline West project, connecting Rancho Cucamonga and the High Desert to Las Vegas, is a high-speed rail project that aims to provide a fully electric, semi-high-speed passenger train service in the Western United States. This project is expected to bring H4 Rail Track connectivity between Southern California and Las Vegas, offering a faster and more sustainable transportation option. However, it’s important to note that the distance between Rancho Cucamonga and Las Vegas (the terminus point) is about 218 miles with its alignment 96% within the median of I-15. According with the estimated traveling time of 2hrs and 10 min., the train speed will be around 104 mph traveling on a H4 track, which sets it in the upper tier of the intercity trains.
