TL;DR - The world seems on fire. Let’s work together at ViVE to fix some of it. This year feels like an adventure through surreality. Juxtaposed with the rise of a third world war and our seeming flirtation with fascism, I ground my hope in the work I do. This is why I’m jubilant as I sit in an airport lounge about to board a plane to #ViVE2024. I relish the opportunity to connect with friends and colleagues through the years who share my passion for making an impact on a broken #healthcare system. I look forward to learning from new voices who bring #diverse perspectives of #LivedExperience with them. I can’t wait to have my own world view challenged so I might stretch my the boundaries of my comfort zone and knowledge. ViVE is such a place to do that. The Mountain Man And MedoPlus The life of Dashrath Manjhi, the Mountain Man, talks about determination, perseverance, and the indomitable human spirit. Something that MedoPlus follows. Let us draw a parallel. Undoubtedly, Dashrath Manjhi's personal tragedy served as his main inspiration for chiselling a path through the mountain. While he was working in the fields, his wife Falguni Devi had hurt herself walking across the rocky terrain to bring him lunch. She unfortunately passed away from lack of prompt medical attention since they were unable to get to the closest hospital in time. He was devastated by his wife's passing and resolved to make sure that no one else in his village would have to endure the same fate because of prompt medical care. Manjhi's goal in carving a path through the mountain was to improve his community's access to healthcare and prevent others from experiencing the same tragedy he had endured. MedoPlus, much like Dashrath Manjhi, is an inspiring force bridging gaps and connecting rural people to essential healthcare facilities. Just as Manjhi's efforts changed the village's life, organisations like MedoPlus work to increase access to healthcare by providing vital medical services to rural areas. MedoPlus carries the essence of Manjhi's legacy by guaranteeing that healthcare is accessible to all, regardless of their geographic location. His narrative is a source of motivation for people trying to bridge healthcare disparities and significantly improve lives of rural communities.   The villagers had to travel 70 kilometres to reach the nearest town to get medical attention. Falguni Devi, the wife of Dashrath Manjhi, passed away in 1959 as a result of inadequate medical care. He carved a path through the Gehlour hills in honour of his wife, making it simpler for his village to receive medical care. After 22 years of nonstop labour, he broke down the hill. MedoPlus Journey is now 36 months. FIVE Healthtech companies that INSPIRE ME, because of their philosophy, (instead of their product + application). Luscii - you may know the company but did you know they have no hierarchy!? They follow an organisational form without hierarchy, known as Holacracy, and every employee enjoys a four-day working week. Everyone has freedom and responsibilities within their own role. Last year I had a wonderful coffee with co-founder Ronald Scheffer, talking through what they do in an area that's a real passion, and our mutual interest in BuurtzorgT. Healthtech 1 - other than the pluckiness of the two energetic founders, since day 1 Raj Kohli &☝️ Peter Huang (who may have added the pointy finger to his name by depoll?) have had a newsletter that can only be described as radical candour - spilling all the challenges, the ups and the downs and being open, vulnerable and emotional in doing so. Written Medicine - whilst many companies sprung up in 2020 in search of gold, Written Medicine has been a genuine social mission for healthcare quality, that also happens to be a digital solution, shouting about marginalised members of society for 12 years now. Ghalib Khan deserves to be on the honours list. Patients Know Best - yes, you all know them, as one of the more established of the UK bunch, but in following PKB and Mohammad Al-Ubaydli, they've always carried a mission that underpins an important philosophical principle. Our 'patient' data is OUR data! Viva la (larger overdue) revolution in shifting that system mindset. Coplug (SidM Health) - There are some healthtech companies who spend more time showing remarkable restraint diligently working closely with local areas, rather than spending all their time making loads of noise. I've always respected this company for doing a lot of things other companies could learn from, and who, consequently, are winning in a system that others are being crushed by. Huge creds to Darshana Gothi Chauhan for instilling diligence and patience in the organisation. NOTE 1 - I've tried to not make this about good healthcare products, but of course a product will no doubt be aligned with a social mission. But in a #healthtech community where in the past we've been swamped with meaningless hype, vaporware, shouty promises, contentious tactics and sharkyness 🦈, I'm always fascinated by what happens behind the scenes and the way that they organise and work. NOTE 2 - Only 1 of these companies has been a client in the past (not current), and I've picked these over ~30 clients, many being awesome and important in their own way. So before others start jumping on and shouting about how company X (theirs or their clients) is really awesome too 'because they care about patient care and are revolutionising Y' - you'll be missing the point of this post! So... I'd love to know - what other companies are working in a way that might inspire us or pursue a unique social mission in a way that differs from the crowd, and why?

There are too many digital health companies. “The tough reality is that we likely created too many digital health companies over the last 10 to 12 quarters…. it’s unlikely that all will receive more funding.” (- Michael Greeley) Agreed. In the past years, money flowed based on the exuberance of confidence that innovative digital health products could find a place in the market. With funding being tight, what’s going to happen in 2024? There will be a growing trend towards consolidation, where ventures that established a place in the market will look to bolster their position. Here are several key factors that could drive this trend: Fundraising Headwinds 💸: The current economic climate is making it tough for startups to secure funding. With investors tightening their belts, consolidation is emerging as a strategic move to navigate these challenging financial waters.  Lack of Demonstrable Value 📉 Many digital health ventures struggle to prove their economic impact. Integrated solutions, not isolated ones, are the key to unlocking real value in healthcare efficiency and patient outcomes. Failure to Fit 'Traditional' Revenue Models 💡 It's time for digital health startups to think outside the box regarding business models. Relying solely on insurance reimbursements can fail. Creativity with revenue is crucial for survival and growth. Challenges with Provider Sales 🏥 Selling to healthcare providers is no walk in the park. Startups face hurdles in demonstrating value, aligning with providers' needs, and navigating complex sales cycles. Simplifying this process is essential for success. Lack of Access to Distribution 🚚  📦 📱 Startups need distribution channels to gain exposure and scale, which is expensive and time consuming. Partnering with players who have deep relationships is crucial; consolidation overcoming distribution hurdles and achieving scale. Physician Onboarding and Adoption 👩⚕️👨⚕️ Educating, training, and supporting doctors in integrating these tools into the patient care pathway is crucial for widespread adoption and effectiveness. Development Costs and Overhead 💰 Building a digital health solution is expensive. Many turn to third-party platforms for cost-effective development and distribution, making collaboration more attractive. Digital health ventures have to navigate a lot. Add internal and external financial pressures, and options to keep moving forward narrow. 2024 will be a reckoning year for startups and their investors; a time to reevaluate and recalibrate business strategies. This marks a significant milestone in our journey. The dedicated development team at Personalised Diagnostics has been nothing short of remarkable, putting in countless hours over the past several months. The project was spearheaded by Simon Gonzalez Lewis, Tom Southall and Harnek Chera (one of the co-founders of knowmalaria and our expert in travel health data).
