Throughout the year, I've had the privilege of speaking at several events, but this one was the most important. I want to thank 🔹️Shanna Adamic and Peter Cajina, MPH MBA, for inviting me to speak on their panel and share Krystal's story to raise awareness about the Black maternal mortality and fetal healthcare crisis. Yes,crisis. It's time to recognize that racism is America's oldest algorithm. By 2050, over 50% of the US population will be BIPOC (Black, Indiginous & People of Color), yet we remain underrepresented. Isn't it time we stop talking about the social determinants of health and start doing something about them? We need to take a deep dive into the data, scrutinize its relevance, and ensure that it reflects the real-life challenges across the spectrum of the human experience. It's time to focus innovation and technology to capture the entirety of the information on our current state of health equity. This is the only way to achieve meaningful and impactful improvement in healthcare outcomes for all. “Right now, women who come from minority ethnic backgrounds or live in economically deprived areas are more likely to experience a miscarriage – and yet they also face more barriers to access the care that could prevent such a loss, or the support they may need if it happens. These inequalities are unacceptable”. – Jane Brewin Health equity within maternal care remains a central concern within reproductive health, and as the industry continues to grow it is essential that bridging this equity gap is considered. Fortunately, there are bright and exciting new companies within the space that are tackling this problem head on, taking a direct approach to making appropriate maternal care accessible to everyone. Companies like Pomelo Care are achieving this by focusing on how the digital world can improve and level conditions, allowing for 24/7 care. Mae and Cayaba Care take this further by specialising in care for BAME and high-risk mothers. “Pregnancy should be a safe and extraordinary journey for all of us. It should be the experience of our choosing”. – Maya Hardigan                                                                   This month was National Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month and serves as a poignant reminder of the profound impact that the loss of a pregnancy or infant can have on families. As we honor this month and those that have gone through loss, we endeavor to increase awareness and enact change. National Maternal Health Awareness Day - The theme for 2024 is Access in Crisis The conversation surrounding maternal health is being reframed to address the disparities in care due to race, socioeconomic status, and geographic location. Data reveals that while some progress has been made, there's much work to be done. It is particularly important to address the issues that result in higher maternal mortality rates among women of color and those who fall in other marginalized groups. Access to quality prenatal care, the expertise of healthcare providers, and the responsiveness of emergency services during childbirth all play critical roles in safeguarding maternal health. As a #LossMom and someone whose life was at risk I urge you to use your voice to #PUSH for change! Continue to ask the hard questions and have the challenging conversations with healthcare providers. Many congratulations to CREATE Health Foundation for a very successful parliamentary report launch. It was great to hear reflections from the Shadow Minister for Women’s Health and Mental Health Abena Oppong-Asare MP and the Vice President at the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists | RCOG Professor Asma Khalil on the report itself, the overarching state of women’s health across the UK, and a collective vision for a more equitable #NHS. The report, ‘Where did it start for you?’ focuses on pre-pregnancy experiences of Black and ethnic minority women following the harrowing findings from the MBRRACE (2022) report which demonstrated the disproportionately poor maternal outcomes that Black, Asian, and ethnic minorities experience in the UK. Professor Geeta Nargund and Praful Nargund write, “We can only expect outcomes to become truly equitable when all women, irrespective of race and social background, are supported and respected to make informed choices about their bodies and pregnancy at every step of the way.” The report provides several insightful recommendations to close the stark inequities in maternal health. #womenshealth #racialequity #racialjustice #maternalhealth #prenatalcare #genderequity #birthtrauma #endracism #healthequity #healthequitynow

Black women face a significant disparity, with a three times higher likelihood of pregnancy-related death than White women. Variations in healthcare quality, chronic conditions, structural racism, and implicit bias contribute to this risk. The World Health Assembly (#WHA) has passed a critical resolution to address the alarming stagnation in reducing maternal and child mortality rates.   Currently, far too many lives are lost to preventable causes: each year, 287,000 women die during #pregnancy or #childbirth, and nearly 5 million children don't reach their fifth birthday. Strengthening #primary healthcare access, particularly #maternity, sexual and reproductive, and child health services, is crucial to reverse this trend.   The resolution emphasizes the need for well-equipped facilities, well-trained #healthcare workers, and access to safe water and sanitation to deliver #qualitycare.   By accelerating progress and focusing on the leading causes of maternal and child deaths, particularly in the most affected countries of the #globalsouth, we can achieve the targets of the UN Sustainable Development Goal 3 (#SDG). However, significant strides are needed: current progress must be multiplied by 4 to 9 times to reach these goals.   This is a critical moment for #globalhealth. 🌟 For Black History Month, we are sharing an article from the NIH which examines the significantly higher rates of maternal death for Black Women:⁠ ⁠ ✍️ The article published on Aug. 12, 2021 found that, "...maternal mortality rate for non-Hispanic Black women was 3.5 times higher than among non-Hispanic White women." (source below)⁠ ⁠ 3.5 times higher... 🤯🤯🤯⁠ ⁠ 🤰🏿Pregnancy is a joyous time for many, but the inequity of healthcare must be addressed. This mortality rate must change.⁠ ⁠ That means: ⁠ ⁠ ➡️ Better healthcare options available⁠ ➡️ Quicker diagnosis of underlying chronic conditions (and the impact of these condition on pregnancy and labor)⁠ ➡️ Eliminating medical racism, implicit bias, and inattentive care within healthcare systems.⁠ 💡 Programs like the Hear Her Campaign through the CDC intend to bring awareness to maternity mortality and lower these shocking numbers. 👉 You can learn more about warning signs that shouldn't be ignored during pregnancy and up to one year postpartum. What impact do mobile health tools have on people accessing healthcare – specifically pregnant women? SCSC Social Connectedness Fellow Kisha G. spoke to women in Malawi and found that the mHealth tool helped facilitate easier check-ins and better connections between pregnant women and their community health workers. Kisha worked with Partners In Health, an international organization dedicated to providing healthcare for people experiencing poverty. M-Health tools help community health workers more accurately understand the community's needs, and as Kisha writes in her report, “the community health workers knew more about the unique pregnancy of every woman... because of the mobile health tool.” This helped ensure the women felt supported and cared for within their community.
