The US Department of Energy has announced plans for Discovery, a new supercomputer set to replace Frontier as the world's fastest. Expected to deliver 3-5 times more computational power than Frontier, Discovery could potentially exceed 8.5 exaflops. This cutting-edge system will drive breakthroughs in fields like climate change prediction, drug discovery, high-energy physics, and green energy solutions. Discovery is designed to excel in advanced AI and machine learning tasks, pushing boundaries in materials science and industrial product design. It will also play a crucial role in the DOE's Integrated Research Infrastructure initiative, combining various research tools and scientific facilities. Proposals from interested vendors are due by August 30, 2024, with a target delivery date of 2027 or early 2028. Energy efficiency remains a top priority, and once operational, Discovery will be accessible to researchers worldwide to tackle scientific challenges and contribute to a better future.

Our latest work out as a preprint - https://lnkd.in/e679gS62 - we reinterpret the quantum states of molecules and transitions between them as a graph. This allows us to use fast graph-based search methods to detect laser cooling schemes in complex molecules in an automated way. We test our approach with C2, OH+, CN, YO, and CO2 and detect thousands of laser cooling schemes, including known ones from previous manual searches, but the vast majority of them so far unknown! Manual searches are much slower and suffer from human bias. Conceptually the change of perspective - viewing quantum states and their transitions as a graph - should be broadly applicable and might help finding quantum control schemes for other quantum systems with discrete spectra. Great news! The organizing committee of the American Physical Society (APS) has accepted a proposal to hold a one-day mini-conference on Digital Twins for fusion research. The gist of the conference is briefly summarized: “Historically, the computational cost in time to solution, limitations with interoperability and scale for conventional science models such as MHD or particle in cell models for the fusion energy problem was too great to be used as part of an engineering design or control system. Recently, there have been significant advances in machine learning, which when utilizing high-speed parallel computing, has resulted in surrogate models and advanced control models that offer high physics fidelity and high speed. This combination has led recently to the exploration of Digital Twins to support fusion research. But the advances come with their own challenges and the objective of this mini conference will be to stimulate discussion and share ideas that can increase the pace of science discovery.”. Development of New QKD Protocols Enhancing Security 🛡️ Device-Independent QKD (DI-QKD): Provides security without trusting quantum devices. Based on Bell inequalities and quantum entanglement. Overcoming technical challenges like high loss and noise. Experimental DI-QKD over short distances. 🛡️ Measurement-Device-Independent QKD (MDI-QKD): Addresses measurement device vulnerabilities. Alice and Bob send quantum states to an untrusted third party (Charlie). Demonstrated over 404 km of optical fiber. Robust security against detector-side channel attacks. Excited to announce the publication of collaborative research between AquaNRG: Environmental and Energy Tech Company and Kent State University led by Dr. Kuldeep Singh (Chaudhary), PhD. This study received support from AquaNRG's Small Business Innovation Research (#SBIR) Phase II grant, funded by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), alongside backing from the University Research Council at KSU, Ohio. The research delves into the spatiotemporal dynamics of calcite dissolution processes utilizing time-lapse high-resolution X-ray CT imaging of live column experiments, coupled with real-time data logging of effluent pH and TDS. Time-lapse imaging of live calcite dissolution was conducted at The The University of Texas at Austin High-Resolution X-ray CT Facility, employing a custom-built NSI XCT scanner. The outcomes of this research have been instrumental in refining AquaNRG's novel multiscale and #AI enhanced reactive transport modeling platform i.e. #aiRock. One of the key implications of this study lies in its potential applications, particularly in predicting spatiotemporal changes in porosity-permeability within geologic carbon storage (#CCS,#GCS, #CCUS) as a consequence of #CO2-fluid-rock interactions. This research offers valuable insights into enhancing our understanding of carbon storage mechanisms.
