We had the opportunity during the SoCalBio Networking Forum at University of California, Los Angeles CNSI on Feb 23 to give tribute to Alfred E. Mann, the Los Angeles #biomedical industry icon, philanthropist, and former Chairman of Southern California Biomedical Council (SoCalBio) (https://lnkd.in/dhCFGPM2). Today, actually, marks the 7th anniversary of Mr. Mann's passing away. He died on February 25, 2016 after a celebrated entrepreneurial career that resulted in the creation of numerous biomedical companies including Pacesetter (a #cardiac pacing company, now part of Abbott in Sylmar, CA), MiniMed (the #insulinpump pioneer, now Medtronic Diabetes in Northridge, CA), Advanced Bionics (maker of #cochlearimplants, now part of Sonova Group in Santa Clarita, CA), Bioness (a neuromodulation company that was acquired by Bioventus), Second Sight Corp. (the maker of the bionic eye, now part of Vivani in Emeryville, CA), NeuroSystec Corporation (#tinnitus drug delivery company whose assets were acquired by Otonomy, Inc in San Diego, CA), and MannKind Corporation (the inhaled #insulin leader headquartered in Westlake Village, CA). As an innovator and pioneering biomedical entrepreneur, Mr. Mann should always be remembered and acknowledged as a pillar of the #medtech industry in the US.

In 2022, the Greater Los Angeles Region #bioscience and #digitalhealth companies attracted $1.85 billion in private funding. The attached map shows the subregional distribution of this funding. The University of California, Los Angeles MedTech Innovation Class yesterday (Jan 18) featured a spirited conversation about building successful MedTech companies to met the requirements of a value-based regime of healthcare. The case study was Axonics, Inc., a $3 billion #neuromodulation company in Irvine, CA that is developing and marketing implantable device to manage #incontinence. Raymond W. Cohen, company founder and CEO, was a superb speaker whose knowledge, authenticity and passion engaged the students and sparked intertest in entrepreneurial activities. Next Week, on January 25, the class will tackle the issue of "MedTech #innovation by design." Two great speakers, Ravi Sawhney of RKS Design and Samir Chatterjee of the Center for Information Systems & Technology at Claremont College will tackle this subject matter. Those interested in this subject matter should start with University of Chicago Political Scientist and Nobel Prize Winner Herbert Simon's book "The Sciences of the Artificial." Although published first in 1969, It is still a compelling treatise on the "science of design" that MedTech #innovators should learn from. #technology #healthcare #science
