Our reprogrammed EVP – embracing change    Our Employer Value Proposition (EVP) reflects the key reasons why our employees are proud and motivated to work at ALDI SÜD IT. It’s our promise to both existing and future employees; we shape it through our behaviour and attitudes. And because our organisation is constantly evolving, it's essential that we regularly examine this promise to make sure it still reflects our current reality.      Figuring this out was one of our initiatives in the last few months. Does the CEO's role matter in a company's success? Absolutely, and the case of Starbucks is a clear example. Laxman Narasimhan's 17-month tenure as CEO of Starbucks was marked by significant challenges, ultimately leading to his departure. During his time, Starbucks faced declining sales, intense clashes with unionized workers, and pressure from activist investors. Sales dropped sharply, particularly in key markets like the US and China, despite efforts to introduce new products and strategies. Additionally, the company experienced tensions with the Workers United union over issues such as LGBTQIA+ rights and the use of the company’s branding in social activism, leading to lawsuits. The presence of activist investors like Elliott Management and Starboard Value further complicated Narasimhan's leadership, as they pushed for actions to boost the company’s stock price. Howard Schultz, Starbucks' former CEO and chairman emeritus, was also critical of the company's direction, emphasizing a need to return to core values and improve customer experience. Are any of our supermarkets distinctive? From a tone of voice perspective, it’s a bit hard to pull them apart. I mean, Aldi and Lidl have a fantastic social game but I struggle to remember if something is from one or the other. That’s why I’m excited and intrigued to see what Asda do with tone of voice with their recent rebrand. There’s certainly a more human tone to some of the work, with the “that’s more like it” strapline. Adam Zavalis, the VP of marketing (not completely lost the Americanisms then), said the new look focuses on it getting back to its northern roots. I hope that goes through to tone of voice too. I mean, other than Morrisons, who’ve got enough on their plate at the moment, Asda are surely the only one who can authentically play in this field? And look how well it’s worked for Yorkshire Tea. There’s no mistaking anything from them as coming from PG Tips. And if they’re going for “northern” rather than just Yorkshire, it gives them a rich cornucopia of language to play with. The trick will be not falling into lazy stereotypes and clichés or finding a way to do it that resonates with northerners rather than raising hackles. When I moved to the south from Barnsley as a kid, I took endless flack for my accent, which I swiftly “lost”. Despite that, I’m proud of my northern roots. My family stretches from Lincolnshire to Lancashire, knows their teacakes from their barms, and quite a few have dinner in the middle of the day. The language and humour are rich and tribal. Even though Asda has stores in the south, there’s no reason not to bring the northern to life in its voice. After all, no one else is. Isn’t that what every brand hopes for? Being distinctive?
