Reflections on Lockton’s Global Benefits Forum It was great to get together with 140 others for the European leg of our global forum last week. We spent two days together at the home of England Rugby and had thought-provoking content, great audience input and plenty of time for food, drinks and fun - anyone for duck and goose herding?  It was good to meet many new people and catch-up with some old friends. I left with a real sense of a community and an openness to sharing. Three points spring to mind: 1. It pays dividends to view risk through different lenses, including the people lens, and to identify and manage key risk inter-dependencies. Coca-Cola gave us a great example of managing operational risk at a bottling plant in a flood-risk area, and also ensuring that factory staff and their families are protected and supported in the event of a flood, which in turn enables the operation to get back up and running again as quickly as possible. CCBC manage this risk through a combination of physical defence structures, insurance and parametric insurance cover that automatically triggers emergency payments to employees if a cat. risk event occurs. 2. Innovative use of captive reinsurers can enable employee risk management and deliver programs that mitigate risk in imaginative and culturally-relevant ways. DHL shared how they use their captive across multiple businesses to fund impactful health programs around the world that make positive, measurable impacts on employee health and reduce risk and insurance premiums materially. 3. Plan for everything. Assume nothing. There’s often more to a moment of brilliance than meets the eye. Think back to Johnny Wilkinson’s drop-goal in 2003 RWC final to snatch the trophy from Australia a the game ended. Sir Clive Woodward shared with us his thinking about developing England's talented individuals and winning team. We also heard about T-CUP: Total Control under Pressure, the principle of leaving nothing to chance. Apologies if this shatters any illusions about the unforgettable drop goal, but that was all part of England’s game plan for the closing stages, if they were behind. It all makes sense now, but the revelation was a surprise for me, as I’d always imagined it boiled down to a moment of individual inspired genius. How great to have planned and practiced for that scenario, and then to have executed so brilliantly under pressure. I’m struggling to think of a better example of controlled, planned delivery under intense pressure. There will be many others of course - please feel free to share. This afternoon I hosted an employee benefits focus group - a joint venture between Brightmine and Justine W. at Innecto Reward Consulting. A key theme from participants was how to engage employees with their benefits. So what's the answer? There was a feeling that while benefits were often mentioned at recruitment and onboarding stage, communications then tailed off. There was agreement that face-to-face communication works best, but this might be from line managers, or champions within the team (works particularly well for those organisations not based in a single workplace), as well as full-on events.
