Almost everyone is talking about ESG, indeed, according to the Open University, 84% of UK business leaders believe that their level of engagement in this field is high or medium with recognition that this is vital to their ongoing growth as a business. But what is ESG? Yes, I know that ESG literally stands for environmental, social and governance factors, but what does this mean in the real world? In short, ESG refers to the overall holistic impact a business is having, not just from a sustainability perspective, but also the impact a business has on society, the local community and even their employees. This is something all businesses seem to be thinking about and many are conscious about doing the right things but it can be difficult to know where to start! An ESG strategy can focus on many different areas including: - Becoming net zero - Sustainable travel options - Diversity across the organisation - Supporting local communities for example, volunteering or mentoring - Using local suppliers - Being transparent around your governance The key here is that there is no right or wrong way to build ESG into your business strategy. It doesn't have to cost the earth and can be tailored to fit your business needs and goals. The overarching principles remain the same whether you're a sole trader or a large entity namely the will to make a positive impact, to do the right things because it's the right thing to do and to be transparent about where you are vs where you want to be (we learn from our failures not our successes after all!). ❓ How ESG Creates Value for Businesses and Society: A Professional Analysis. Part 1 Environmental, social, and governance (ESG) investing is a growing trend in the business world, as investors and businesses alike recognize the importance of ESG factors in determining long-term value. ESG factors can have a significant impact on a company's financial performance, risk profile, and reputation. ✅ What are the chances that your investment will pay off? To investigate the effectiveness of investing in mindfulness, a study was conducted on 2,000 different companies from a variety of business sectors to ensure the best possible sample. It was found that 63% of all companies' revenue increased after starting their ESG investment. Revenue for 29% of the companies remained at about the same level and only 8% of the companies showed negative revenue growth. Therefore, the chance that your investment expenditure on charity and sustainability will not pay off is 8%. ✅ Financial performance Studies have shown that companies with strong ESG performance tend to outperform their peers on key financial metrics, such as return on equity, return on assets, and total shareholder return.
