The state of employee wellbeing is poor across the board, but research continues to highlight that women face a unique set of challenges when it comes to wellbeing at work. Here's a few statistics to illustrate... 👉 Just 1 in 3 women feel able to discuss their health in the workplace (Department of Health and Social Care). 👉 1 in 10 women have left their job due to menopausal symptoms (Mental Health UK). 👉 57% of women say a gynaecological or hormonal health condition has harmed their career (Women's Health). 👉 The rate of women experiencing burnout has risen to 42% over the past year, while for men it has declined to 30% (Infinite Potential). 👉 Women feel less supported by their organisation when it comes to their wellbeing (48/100) compared to men (57/100) (Infinite Potential). 👉 Women were 5% more likely than men to experience high or extreme levels of pressure or stress in the past year (Mental Health UK). There are myriad factors at work here, including the extra caregiving and housekeeping responsibilities women commonly take on and the often debilitating health challenges many women face during their working lives. But what strikes us most about statistics like these is that they highlight just how many women don't feel heard or able to speak up at all at work. Repeated studies, including the ones mentioned above, demonstrate that women find it especially difficult to raise concerns about their wellbeing with their employer. As we look ahead to International Women's Day tomorrow, it's clear that we still have a long way to go in dismantling barriers like stigma and unconscious bias that continue to keep women's voices on the sidelines. Inclusive workplaces aren't built overnight, but a good place to start is providing psychologically safe avenues where women can speak up when they're struggling without fear of how it might be perceived.
