An estimated 43% of children under five years in low and middle-income countries are at risk of under-development, according to a report by the Lancet New series. This calls for the urgent need for increased parental support programs. Among the groups requiring attention are adolescent parents as emphasized by Noellie Amon-Kotey in her report. Parents who are adolescents should not be left to raise children without support. They need individualized support in key areas such as healthcare, empowerment, community support, and parenting. Can a mission that is oriented towards peace and a sustainable future utilise a language of “FORCE”?  Highlight of Week 2: This week I had the pleasure of meeting Faith Abiodun - the Executive Director of UWC International - who eloquently explained why the 62 year old mission at United World College - “to use education as a FORCE to unite people, nations and cultures” intentionally employs such a heavy word. “FORCE” 1. The perpetrators of evil in this world are FORCEFUL in their drive to create division amongst people, nations and cultures.  We must act with equal (if not greater) FORCE to combat this shredding of our humanity by using education as a COUNTERFORCE to those who seek to pull us apart.  At UWC - we do this by identifying students who can make a difference in the world and giving them a chance to come together at our 20 campuses around the world.  2. How we see the world is influenced by where we have come from and we each seek to shape the world differently based on where we think we are going.  GIven these differences, to unite for peace - we must be able to have a dialogue with those who come from different backgrounds or have a different future reality.   At UWCSEA in Singapore - we have 100 scholars from 61 countries amongst our student body.  Our campuses create space to talk on a deeper level to learn about each other’s backgrounds. 3. Every good habit is built by practice and we need to practice peaceful interactions even in the face of disagreement and conflict.  If we apply James Clear’s formula for atomic habits to the UWC movement which includes 75,000 alumni/warriors for peace, 5000 volunteers, 157 National Committees and countless parents, teachers and current students - and we all aim to be 1% better in creating peaceful habits while also influencing those in our sphere to do the same - we CAN have an outsized positive impact. Two weeks in - and it has been two incredibly inspiring weeks of connections and engagement with the UWCSEA community.  Faith's address is worth listening to for anyone who is looking for a light of hope and optimism in this world - whether you are part of the UWC Movement (or merely inspired by it).
