Menopausal women are the fastest-growing demographic in the workplace. Are we doing enough to support them? As the menopause experience can differ from woman to woman, it can feel like an impossible feat to understand what support is needed, but you don’t need to be an expert in menopause, the symptoms, and the medical nuances to support women in the workplace. It's understanding the needs of women which is crucial to create a psychologically safe work environment. Even a simple question such as ‘What can I do to support you?’ can greatly benefit women through this normal transition. How can YOU support women experiencing menopause? It's time ⏰ to discuss an essential but often overlooked aspect of workplace well-being: menopause. Creating an inclusive workplace environment is crucial for the development of a positive company culture. The impact of menopause can be detrimental to one's overall health. According to a study by Bank of America, the daily impact in the lives of peri-menopause and postmenopausal employees include: ⭐ Lack of quality sleep (45%) ⭐ Mental health/mood (30%) ⭐ Physical health (20%) ⭐ Relationships with family/partner (20%) ⭐ Ability to focus on work (17%) ⭐ Daily activities (15%) ⭐ Career progression (9%) Additionally, the new BofA report finds 64% of women want menopause-specific benefits, yet only 14% believe their employer recognizes the need for them. Seven ways employers can make their workplace environment more inclusive for women experiencing menopause consists of: encouraging open dialogue, flexible work arrangements, wellness programs, educational resources, comfortable workspace, managerial sensitivity, and policy review. For our latest Senior People Professionals Network event we brought our senior communities in Scotland and Northern Ireland together online to discuss women’s health in the workplace.   rachel suff and Claire McCartney from CIPD talked about CIPD’s latest research in the areas of menopause and menstruation. We heard that:   ·      More than 1 in 4 (27%) women with menopause symptoms think menopause has had a negative impact on their career progression. ·      Over half of women surveyed (53%) have been unable to go into work at some point due to their menopause symptoms and most felt unable to tell their manager the reason for their absence. ·      Around half of employees (49%) said they never tell their manager when their absence is related to their menstrual cycle. ·      Low-cost/highly valued ways for employers to help include having free period products available, relaxed clothing policies, providing access to a break room, and encouraging open conversations where appropriate.   Jill Burgess (FCIPD) and Michelle Rayner - Menopause Workplace Training Network shared real world examples of good practice in industry, and discussed how Henpicked: Menopause in the Workplace training is helping organisations across the UK.   The session ended with attendees joining breakout groups to discuss ways of overcoming barriers and implementing improved practices, and each decided on one thing we would do differently to make effective change.
