🚨9000+ dengue patients in Karnataka - read my morning newspaper. The sweet season change that we once romanticized, now seems to be threatening us with widespread health issues. What’s even scarier is that the diseases are also changing and becoming deadlier than ever. But there’s so little to no awareness about their serious impact! Yes, we are familiar with dengue and its symptoms. We have seen people around us, or even ourselves, once being infected by it. And we know that its common symptoms are fever and body ache. However, recent research suggests dengue has more serious impacts on our brain health than we ever knew! The disease can cause permanent damage to the brain, and can even have serious implications on the nervous system. 😓 This makes the news of surging dengue cases all around the country sound more daunting. All we can do right now is spread as much awareness as possible, and motivate people to take preventive measures against the disease. Remember the DD national ad that taught us to empty utensils with stagnant water, cover our body as much as possible, and maintain a safe, hygienic environment? It’s time we implement those again, along with some more, like - 👉If you go through symptoms like fever, headache, muscle and joint pain, nausea, or rash, contact your nearest doctor and get tested asap. 👉Even without fever, if you have severe abdominal pain, bleeding gums or nose, persistent vomiting, fatigue, and restlessness - do not ignore them, and see a doctor immediately! 👉If infected, do not panic. A balanced diet with lots of liquids (except for caffeine and alcohol) and good rest shall help achieve faster recovery. What is the situation around your place? Are you doing well? The 2016-20 National Diabetes Strategy Implentation Plan had some great high level priority actions. However, without dedicated funding and reporting against progress indicators not much changes. No indicators were identified for 3 out of 4 potential measures of progress towards reducing the impact of diabetes in pregnancy (Goal 4). For strengthening diabetes research (Goal 7), no indicators were identified for the purpose of monitoring and reporting progress. Diabetes professsional societies and consumer organisations are ready to work with the government on implementing the 2021-30 national strategy. As Sof Andrikopoulos highlights, this must include investment in research as well as data for monitoring progress.

This should be renamed as a #dayofthedamned....it's represents a day of tragedy and shame. Outbreaks and epidemics occur in the world's most vulnerable places, affecting the weakest, poorest and most remote places. Efforts at prepositioning medical countermeasures, training and deploying staff and rapid response teams, putting aside response funds to mobilize teams, a lot of knee jerk responses to outbreaks of endemic diseases with outbreaks potential...Lassa, Dengue, Diphtheria, Yellow Fever....the list is endless. The focus has to be on 'Prevention, Rapid Detection, Response, Recovery and Rehabilitation'..not just Vaccines or unaffordable therapeutics...Health systems need to be disrupted and rebuilt from bottom up, health care workers need to massively produced globally and paid well, rhetoric about equity needs to be changed and the private health sector needs to be engaged more effectively, health care and health insurance should not be about pharma...but about life. Every life should matter... Sadly, it seems that what we have learned from the COVID-19 pandemic is simple. History will keep repeating itself...until it won't ! World Kidney Day is a global health awareness campaign focusing on the importance of the kidneys and reducing the frequency and impact of kidney disease and its associated health problems worldwide. We wanted to take this time and share some information on chronic kidney disease (CKD) in dogs and cats. Pets with CKD experience a gradual loss of kidney function over time. It can be caused by many different conditions which affect one or more processes of the kidney. The kidneys play a vital role in the body. Healthy kidneys remove waste products from the blood; help to control pH levels as well as blood pressure, serum electrolytes, calcium and phosphorous levels, and water balance; and produce some hormones which are essential for red cell production and calcium balance. When kidney function is impaired, body systems become imbalanced. When function is significantly impaired, waste levels can become toxic quickly. World Leprosy Day is observed annually around the world on the last Sunday of January, falling on 28th January this year. Leprosy, also known as Hensen’s Disease, still occurs in more than 120 countries, with more than 200,000 new cases reported every year. It is currently treated worldwide by multidrug therapy (MDT), which consists of a combination of Rifampin, Clofazimine, and Dapsone. Although patients are considered “cured” after the completion of MDT, many experience complications associated with leprosy reactions are significant causes of permanent disability, and occasional relapse/reinfection. The aim of celebrating this day is to raise global awareness of this neglected tropical disease (NTD) and call attention to the fact that it can be prevented, treated, and cured. Tip – Currently in Myanmar, Rifampicin is mainly given FOC under reimbursement plan by township clinics, NGOs and specialty clinics.
