Mental Health Support is Not a Bandaid In times of struggle, seeking support is crucial. However, it's essential to view mental health care as more than just a temporary fix. Too often, people look for help as a quick bandage to cover their wounds, only addressing surface-level issues. But true healing requires a long-term commitment to self-care and wellbeing. That's why I'm passionate about shifting the narrative surrounding mental health support. Instead of viewing therapy as a temporary solution, we should embrace it as a valuable maintenance tool for our overall wellness. Just as we visit the doctor for physical check-ups, regular wellbeing sessions can help us maintain our mental and emotional health. We have consistently focused on wellness at Sagility, and we recently reinforced the importance of mental health and wellbeing. To that extent, we launched a comprehensive mental wellness program to support and uplift our employees. May: A Month of Reflection and Action on Mental Wellness This May, as we mark Mental Wellness Awareness Month, I find myself reflecting deeply on my personal journey through mental health challenges. This month holds significant meaning for me, having climbed out of very dark places. These experiences have not only brought me closer to understanding my own mental health but also fueled my commitment to advocating for better mental wellness for everyone. Throughout this journey, I've learned that resilience is not about invulnerability; rather, it involves having the right tools and support to manage life's adversities effectively. My leadership mantra has long been "From People, With People, For People." Allow me to explain what that means in the context of Mental Wellness: From People: Having experienced rough patches in my journey, I know all too well that suffering should never be a silent battle. We often hear, "Don't judge a man until you've walked a mile in his shoes." This couldn’t be more true about understanding mental health. With People: Empathy might seem elusive, but its essence lies in our actions when we notice someone struggling. Sometimes, all it takes is to listen, offer a kind word, or simply be there with kindness. For People: The stigma surrounding mental illness is not only tangible but also deeply harmful. As leaders, it is incumbent upon us to actively confront and dismantle these barriers, fostering an environment that is both nurturing and open-hearted. In this space, we celebrate every individual as a whole, honoring their vulnerabilities and differences with respect and solidarity. During my exploration into what mental wellness truly means, the work of Dr Lucy Hone provided a clear and powerful definition: “Feeling Good and Functioning Well.” This simple yet profound understanding cuts through the noise, providing a benchmark for our mental health discussions and initiatives.
