Dear fellow leaders, managers, owners of insurance agencies, unit trust and property agencies. I am all for recruiting and fully support all these industries as i am in one as well. What i dont support is lying, not being transparent, twisting facts and most importantly not being open and honest about what our industries really require for one to be successful. Please stop telling people we are flexible, we have work life balance and our industry is an easy industry to be in. This is clearly miss-leading and not even nearly close to the truth. Although yes everyone can see most of us who that do well live a rather comfortable life but please tell them what we had to go through to get where we are. The sacrifices we have made from having no time for anything else, sleepless nights, being broke, being rejected, wanting to give up countless times, being put aside by friends and family and many countless hurdles we have had a long the way. I have been meeting many candidates of recent and most that have gone to so called interviews tell me that what i tell them is first time they have heard the bitter truth. And thank me for being open and honest about what they are going to face in my industry. We are asking them to risk time in their lives, put their family on hold and most importantly come into a career/business which has no guarantee whatsoever of succees and totally relies on their effort and ambitions. I can understand that we need to build our teams for the longevity of our businesses but please do it right so that only good things happen in return with your business. This is solely my own opinion and many may have differing opinions but as a person who understands what hard life is i will never put another life at risk for my own benefit. Be Happy, Stay Healthy. Before You Sign a Job Offer A job offer is not just about salary and titles. Make sure to examine other aspects such as: 1- the culture. How management “chooses” to treat its people matters! 2- whether the opportunity aligns with your purpose and values. 3- whether the position provides autonomy & opportunities for growth. 4- consider other forms of compensation such as annual leave, health insurance, wellness benefits, and bonus. Not every company is flexible with availing annual leave. Not every company rewards employees’ contributions. Some companies choose cheap insurance packages that limit your medical coverage.

How important is flexibility in driving talent retention? The Australian Insurance Talent Review answers this question as part of a comprehensive deep dive into movement across the insurance talent market during the last financial year. According to our recent survey of insurance professionals, 94% of respondents have some degree of flexibility and engage in hybrid working arrangements within their organisations, most still working 2 or more days from home. Flexibility is of utmost importance to job seekers and employees across the sector, demonstrated in our survey where it was given an average importance rating of 74%. Middle management respondents regard flexibility as the most crucial factor when making a decision to stay in, or leave, a role, while those in other roles, such as distribution for example, place less emphasis on flexibility in their decision making, so there is a notable correlation between seniority/function and importance of flexible working. Director of More Inclusive Experiences | Leadership Coach | Self-Fidelity Pioneer | Author | Thinking Environment® Trainer & Facilitator | True Power Podcast Host |
You no longer have to PRETEND you don't have a life outside of work, but do you feel empowered to PRIORITISE what's really most important to you? In my latest episode of True Power Podcast I enjoyed a fabulous conversation with Deborah McBrearty Insurance Lead at Accenture NZ. Deb shared a ripper of a story about experiencing the “The Inbox Challenge” as part of the recruitment screening processes used by a law firm in London many years ago. In Deb’s words: “When I first went to London to interview for a job with a law firm, one of the tasks they gave us as part of the recruitment process was what they called ‘The Inbox Challenge.” You were given a list of things and you had to explain how you would prioritise and deal with them. In the list of things there were a few personal things. Really, the test was about showing that you are fully focused on work, and can ‘get rid of’ or delegate personal tasks. For example, if your fire alarm was going off at home – how were you going to deal with that without interrupting our day. (…) And, that really stuck with me - that I had to keep up this pretense that there was nothing important outside my work life. For a long time, I pretended that I did not have a life outside of work.” I can really relate to Deb’s story. Not that long ago, as a senior corporate executive, I requested a change in work arrangements to 4-days-a-week to accommodation other aspects of my life. My request was declined on the grounds that the job “required my FULL executive presence.” My chat with Deb has got me thinking about how far we have come, and how far we still have to go when it comes to work/life harmonisation. Recently, I have had a feeling of something being ‘not quite right’ when I see people on Zoom ‘soldiering on’ with sick kids in the background, or when they are visibly sick themselves, or recovering from surgery. I have been guilty of some of these things myself. There's a big difference between no longer having to PRETEND we don't have lives and being supported to PRIORITISE what’s most important to us. And of course, often our disempowerment is an inside job. It's the voices in our head that convince us we can't possibly take time away from work. Which of the below 3 options best describe your experience of work/life integration? 👉 It’s best to pretend I don’t have a life. 👉 It’s OK to have a life …as long as it doesn’t interfere with work. 👉 I feel empowered to integrate my work and my life.
