Palm oil is one of the most widely used products in food and beverage manufacturing, but its production can lead to deforestation, habitat destruction, and social issues. The Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) is a global non-profit dedicated to promoting the sustainable production and sourcing of palm oil. Certification from the agency signifies that the palm oil in a product has been produced in an environmentally and socially responsible manner, with enhanced environmental protection, conservation of biodiversity, and more ethical harvesting and labor practices. RSPO currently offers four types of certification. #RSPO #PalmOil #Sustainability #FoodSafety #FoodEthics

Palm oil is found in almost 50% of packaged supermarket products, however, its production often comes at the expense of precious habitats and endangered species. Palm oil’s versatility and affordability make it an essential component of the global food industry. It is also efficient and reliable year round, making it an important crop for growers and small holders by offering a dependable income. A sustainable solution then needs to not only protect endangered species and habitats, but also the livelihoods of the people who depend on the crop. Standards can help pave the way for sustainable palm oil production with clarity and purpose. Recognized certification assures consumers that the palm oil used in products is sourced from responsible and sustainable practices, and preserves the income of the growers. Deforestation is a critical risk for the future of coffee. At JDE Peet’s we are engaging with the coffee origin countries not only to comply with EUDR but most importantly to stop any further coffee related deforestation so that to contribute to ensure a future for coffee in an inclusive way that protects smallholder farmers and the industry.
We are excited that the Dutch Association of Investors for Sustainable Development (De Vereniging van Beleggers voor Duurzame Ontwikkeling (VBDO)) recognises our efforts in combating deforestation and preserving biodiversity as a good practice in its recent report on biodiversity and business! 🏆 At JDE Peet's, we are, from bean to cup, committed to making a positive impact on the planet and the communities we serve. Recognising nature’s vital role in coffee production, we intensively collaborate with partners and stakeholders to implement regenerative agriculture and responsible land-use practices. These initiatives not only improve soil quality and water management but also contribute to fighting climate change and uplifting the livelihoods of farmers, their families, and communities. But our commitment doesn't stop there! Engaged in restoration and reforestation projects in countries such as Honduras, Peru, and Indonesia, we address deforestation’s root causes, including poverty. In our unwavering pursuit to combat deforestation, we have set ambitious goals to establish a deforestation-free supply chain and to support coffee-producing nations in achieving deforestation-free sectors. Our inclusive strategy to combat deforestation involves utilising high-definition satellite imagery to map forests and coffee-growing areas accurately, assessing deforestation risks linked to coffee production, and implementing proactive measures to prevent or mitigate deforestation. We are proud that our efforts are recognised and hope sharing our approach can inspire other companies to act as well. Together we can drive positive change in the world! 🌍 For the full report, access the link here: https://lnkd.in/ejDUZj8s #JDEPeets #Sustainability #Deforestation #Biodiversity #Coffee #VBDO #MakingADifference #Honduras #Peru #Indonesia

In the sphere of sustainable finance, the ongoing discourse surrounding palm oil production's environmental impact stands as a pivotal and pressing topic. While palm oil serves various economic purposes—from being a fundamental cooking oil to a crucial component in biofuels and an array of consumer products—it is undeniable that its production often results in significant environmental degradation, particularly in tropical regions where vast swathes of forests are cleared for plantations. The fundamental question persists: Can palm oil production ever achieve true environmental sustainability? This query has sparked extensive deliberations among experts, with recent EU regulations targeting products linked to deforestation presenting a potential catalyst for change. These regulations may compel food companies to source palm oil sustainably, thereby necessitating stricter scrutiny and enhanced accountability throughout the supply chain. Efforts to promote sustainable palm oil production encompass various practices, including intercropping and maintaining biodiversity within plantations. Notably, traditional methods in West Africa have long demonstrated sustainable approaches over centuries, highlighting the potential for harmonizing economic interests with environmental stewardship. However, challenges loom large, particularly in regions like Indonesia and Malaysia, where rapid expansion has exacted a toll on natural habitats, leading to deforestation and habitat loss for endangered species. Organizations such as the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) have undertaken commendable initiatives to set standards for responsible palm oil production, aiming to reduce harm to wildlife and local communities. The burgeoning demand for palm oil has undoubtedly propelled economic growth but has come at the cost of natural habitats and biodiversity. Despite industry efforts to mitigate environmental impacts, lingering concerns persist regarding the sector's long-term sustainability, particularly concerning forest preservation and species conservation. As the global community endeavors to strike a balance between economic imperatives and environmental sustainability, the imperative for transparent, accountable, and eco-friendly practices in palm oil production becomes increasingly paramount. #SustainableFinance #EnvironmentalImpact #PalmOilProduction #SustainableBusiness #Biodiversity #Deforestation #RSPO #EcoFriendly #EnvironmentalStewardship #SustainabilityInitiatives #GlobalTrade #EconomicGrowth #ConservationEfforts #WildlifeProtection #ClimateAction #GreenEconomy #SustainableDevelopment #CorporateResponsibility #SupplyChainTransparency #EcoInnovation #EcoFriendlyInvestments #ResourceManagement #ConservationTechnology #SustainableAgriculture #EcoSolutions #GreenInvesting #CorporateSustainability #EnvironmentalPolicy #ClimateChangeMitigation

🚫 🌴 Boycotting Palm Oil is Not the Answer 🌴 🚫 While palm oil has been associated with deforestation and environmental harm, there is another side to the story. Sustainable palm oil production is possible and is actively contributing to environmental preservation and ethical practices. We define sustainable palm oil as that which is Certified Organic, RSPO Identity Preserved, Non GMO and Fair Trade. This palm does not involve deforestation and supports biodiversity, fair labor practices, and the livelihoods of small farmers. By choosing sustainably produced palm oil, we can make a significant impact without completely boycotting a vital agricultural product. 🌿 Learn more about the importance of the palm oil sustainability movement: https://lnkd.in/dAZiTrS2 Together, we can support a more sustainable future. 🌴 #PalmOil #Sustainability #SustainableAgriculture #PalmDoneRight #EcoFriendly #DeforestationFree #EthicalProduction #NaturalHabitats #GreenFuture #EnvironmentallyResponsible #FairTrade
