As we mobilize to save democracy in the next 100 days, I reflect on the question posed by @ashleyjsharpton during our “Children of the Movement” panel at the National Action Network conference: “What advice would you give to those passionate about civil rights and making a difference?” My response calls to mind the wisdom shared by Vice President Harris in her viral “Coconut Tree Speech.” 🥥🌴 “My mother used to give us a hard time sometimes, saying, ‘I don’t know what’s wrong with you young people. You think you just fell out of a coconut tree? You exist in the context of all in which you live and what came before you.’” -@kamalaharris/@vp We have an opportunity to register a significant number of new voters in this election. How do we do it? Step one: by studying past efforts, both successful and unsuccessful—the “context.” In 1983, my father, @revjjackson, led a Southern Crusade voter registration drive through the South, engaging people county-by-county in areas rife with voter suppression. By the end of his 1984 presidential campaign, he had registered an impressive two million new voters—all without the help of social media. Today, with new technology, radical reimagining, and the power of #GenZ, we can build upon those efforts and make history together. #SwiftiesForHarris has developed an innovative plan: identifying voter registration requirements in every state where there’s a #TaylorSwift concert, creating QR codes with voter registration and donation links, and crafting “get out the vote” friendship bracelets. We are excited to announce that June 18th is National Voter Registration Day, the last day to register to vote. We need your help to spread the word through the Give an X campaign - a youth-led, non-partisan initiative aimed at empowering young people to make their voices heard. Give an X is dedicated to making politics personal. It doesn't exist to lecture or tell anyone who to vote for; it simply aims to show young people that the issues they care about are worth giving an X on a ballot. They aim to get as many 18-25-year-olds as possible to register to vote. Our President, Cheryl Tung, and LWV-Wake members Elaine Okal, Kristen Howard, Helen Zimmerman and Marian Lewin participated in LWVUS's "Power the South," conference which brings together leaders specifically from the Southern States to analyze trending issues, receive trainings, and become equipped to empower marginalized and BIPOC voters in their Southern locations. The South was the birthplace of the US's civil rights movement in the 1950s and 1960s in the US, yet rights continue to be under attack with threats like rising white supremacy, patriarchy, continued classism, and authoritarianism. "Power the South" is LWVUS's movement to make our democracy more inclusive, equitable, and collaborative. Also included are a few photos from past years. DEVELOPING BLACK BRITAIN'S MANDATE FOR 2024 ELECTIONS The Africa Centre is working in partnership with Black Equity Organisation and Operation Black Vote (OBV) to create Black Britain’s mandate for holding the next government to account. This will include policy asks for all political parties of what Black people across the UK believe will make their lives better. Black Britain’s Mandate aims to unify and amplify the diverse voices within Black communities, empowering them to assert their political influence and shape a vision of 21st-century Britain rooted in a vibrant multicultural democracy. This vision is about rectifying past injustices and creating a future where justice, equality, and inclusivity are upheld for all. The Africa Centre shares the goal to empower our communities, advocate for equity, and contribute to positive societal change and is running a series of interactive workshops designed to foster community engagement and shape a robust and meaningful mandate that aims to hold the Government accountable and raise voting awareness. The upcoming election period represents a pivotal opportunity for change and we want you to play a part in that change. As a partner, The Africa Centre will be hosting a number of public consultation forums to gather opinions from our communities on what matters to them. Let's Make a Resolution to Strengthen Democracy Together The New Year brings an opportunity for renewal and recommitment - not just in our personal lives but in our roles as active citizens within our democracy. The League of Women Voters of Maryland invites you to consider adopting resolutions that can strengthen the fabric of our society. ENCOURAGE OTHERS TO VOTE Voting is the cornerstone of our democracy, and yet, so many eligible voters don’t participate. This year, make it your mission to encourage friends, family, and community members to register and vote. The National Urban League is set to host its 2024 Conference in New Orleans, with a focus on the urgent threat of Project 2025, a far-right agenda orchestrated by the radical right. This agenda, if implemented, would dismantle democratic institutions, abolish checks and balances, and impose a far-right agenda that infringes on basic liberties and violates public will. One of the most alarming policy proposals contained in Project 2025 is a sweeping purge of the federal workforce, replacing upstanding public servants with partisan loyalists prepared to override traditional checks and balances. In a grave misunderstanding of the Vice President’s constitutional duties, one of the major-party candidates for that office has indicated he would reject a state’s electoral votes for an opposition candidate. The 2024 election could be the last free and fair presidential election of our lifetimes. As part of the National Urban League’s historic commitment to civic engagement, voter mobilization has long been a key pillar of our mission. Never since the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 has that mission been more important. As the National Urban League and our affiliates from across the nation head to New Orleans to open our 2024 Conference on Wednesday, we invite members of the public to join us as we come together in solidarity to advocate for equality and justice at the Reclaim Your Vote Rally on Wednesday at Xavier University of Louisiana Athletics Convocation Center.
