Ambassador of Canada to the European Union 🇨🇦🇪🇺 Ambassadrice du Canada auprès de l’Union européenne

Dear colleagues and friends, Just what has our team been up to as we finish the first half of 2024? I want to share a Q2 update on the work I’ve been leading with our team at the Canadian Mission to the European Union 🇨🇦🇪🇺 including: 🔹Our Canada Day celebration, at which we welcomed the new Ambassador-designate of the EU to Canada Geneviève Tuts. Thank you to our friends and partners. Let’s keep building! Huge thanks to Julie Ferguson-Ceniti, Sarah Messahel and Gizem Eras for leading our event team 🇨🇦🙌 🔹 I met with former Italian PM Enrico Letta on his report on the European Single Market. We discussed the importance of #CETA, our trade and economic agreement, and his focus on enhancing innovation and education as a “fifth freedom” 🍁 Canada is now a member of Horizon Europe, where our work is led by Aslin Unlusoy. 🔹 Support to Ukraine, and work with the EU and G7 on Reconstruction with DG Gert Jan Koopman. I participated in a conference on the return of children illegally removed to Russia alongside the Prosecutor General of Ukraine, Andriy Kostin. 🔹 Humanitarian aid coordination for Gaza, including the Norway - EU International Partners Meeting, and the 8th Brussels Conference on Syria with the team leadership of Kate Powers. On a personal note, I was pleased to see my colleague Ambassador Badr Abdelatty chosen as Egypt’s new Foreign Minister. He has been a leader on the humanitarian aid crisis of Palestinians here in Brussels. 🔹 I hosted a “Women in Customs” event with my Canadian Border Services colleagues and women from over twenty partner nations. Inspiring speakers, led by VP Jennifer Lutfallah, spoke on the importance of women’s leadership and economic empowerment as part of their work on secure borders. 🔹 I was honoured to attend the 80th anniversary of Canada’s D-Day landing on Juno Beach with veterans. Their sacrifice and service continues to inspire us. Building on our outreach on security and defence issues, Deputy Head of Mission Nicholas Brousseau spoke to Canada’s NATO Field School. 🔹 With our bilateral Embassy 🇧🇪 welcomed new Air Canada direct flights from Brussels to Toronto, adding to the daily Brussels to Montreal direct flights ✈️🍁 These are just some of the many activities our team leads to keep strengthening our 🇨🇦🇪🇺 ties to the 27 member states of the European Union. We are always pleased to welcome Canadians to Brussels! Especially now that we are preparing for the new session of the European Parliament and European Commission in the Fall. Sincerely, Ambassador Ailish Campbell

Seems strange to put Syria and Gaza under the same umbrella without mentioning Sudan (if you're already stretching beyond Europe). Also strange to be supporting ukraine in the return of the children but not supporting israel in the return of the hostages or sending aid to Israel to support those who had to flee their homes due to constant bombardment by palestinians or hizballa. I'm curious what drives priorities over there...
