I'm excited to present two research papers at ASME TURBO EXPO 2024 (ASME International Gas Turbine Institute) in London. Is anyone else attending? 😊 My first paper titled: 'GT2024-128129: MEANLINE DESIGN AND AERODYNAMIC 3D RANS INVESTIGATIONS OF A MULTISTAGE HELIUM AXIAL COMPRESSOR' discusses and presents a detailed model for meanline design of a multistage helium axial compressor for a HTGR (High Temperature Gas Reactor) application. The paper presents aerodynamic design methodology along with loss models. The presented methodology is validated for designs with high efficiency and blade loadings using RANS CFD method on (Siemens Digital Industries Software) Simcenter STAR-CCM+. Furthermore, generated designs from the proposed method are compared with existing industry designs for HTGR application. #turbomachinery #aerodynamics #meanline #axialcompressor #compressordesign #HTGR #Heliumcompressor #multistagecompressor #aerodynamicdesign #lossmodels #RANS #CFD

UPCOMING EVENT: Looking forward to RAeS 2024 Lawrence Hargrave Memorial Address? Here's a sneak preview ✈ It isn’t often we see Defence business recognised in the broader community for their contribution to the innovation sector and the national industrial base more broadly. However in 2023, that’s exactly what SYPAQ achieved, securing the coveted Australian Financial Review Most Innovative Business Award. Now Defence technologies are often associated with the exquisite and as such, the expensive, delivery of capability. SYPAQ’s journey in marrying the best of commercial research and development, with a clear Defence mission priority, resulted in the Corvo Precision Payload Delivery System (PPDS) – also known as the cardboard drone, which challenged the norms of typical innovation in the autonomous systems space. Covering rapid prototyping, “out of the box” thinking, the importance of collaboration between technologist and end-users, and rapidly changing landscape of modern warfare, Amanda will share insights regarding the highs and lows of bringing such a novel capability into service, and share SYPAQ’s plans to continue to disrupt the technological landscape. 📢 Remembering GUTMA's important milestone in #UTM standardization ⬇ In February, the ASTM Focus Group officially accepted GUTMA’s recommendations, resulting in updates to the mapping of ASTM standards F3411-22a and F3548-21. This achievement was the result of the diligent work of the GUTMA Task Force, co-led by ANRA Technologies and Wing, and supported by 20 GUTMA Members, including Airwayz, ANGOKA, Heron AirBridge, HHLA Sky GmbH, High Lander, NEC Corporation, Technology Innovation Institute, and TruWeather Solutions. In December 2023, the Task Force conducted a comprehensive review to ensure these ASTM standards align with U-space regulation, fostering coherence in the UTM ecosystem. The Task Force's ASTM mapping ensures interoperability for USSPs in the following services: ➡ Network Identification Service ➡ UAS Flight Authorization Service ➡ Conformance Monitoring Service The mapping can be accessed here: https://lnkd.in/gNNtTRJC This milestone underscores GUTMA’s global impact and the valuable contributions of our Members. If you are interested in shaping the future of UTM, consider joining GUTMA. By becoming a Member, you can launch your own Task Force and actively participate in driving the industry forward 👇 https://lnkd.in/dYWm8ud

I'm excited to present two research papers at ASME TURBO EXPO 2024 (ASME International Gas Turbine Institute) in London. Is anyone else attending? 😊 My second paper titled: 'GT2024-126107: DESIGN STRATEGY OF THRUST GAS BEARINGS FOR REFRIGERANT COMPRESSORS CONSIDERING EFFECTS OF CENTRIFUGAL FORCE AND CONVECTIVE INERTIA' presents design strategy by consideration of 3D thermo-hydrodynamic (THD) performance of rigid thrust gas bearings lubricated with a refrigerant gas using Reynolds Equation and computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The gas bearing is operated in both hydrodynamic and hybrid modes at high ambient pressures typical to the bearing compartment of refrigerant compressors. The CFD simulations adopted an advanced turbulence model and Peng-Robinson real gas equation of state while the Reynolds Equation-based THD model adopted NIST Refprop for real gas model. Results from the two models are compared, and detailed observations on gas bearing performance are presented including load capacity, pressure profiles, streamlines, effect of convective inertia, centrifugal force and Mach number, etc.

𝗦𝗣𝗘𝗔𝗞𝗘𝗥𝗦 𝗦𝗨𝗠𝗠𝗜𝗧 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰 “In-Orbit Manufacturing & Assembly, a new way to consider the Space Market.” - by Gwenaëlle Aridon, Advanced projects & Robotics, Airbus DS, France. Over the past twenty years, the concept of In Space Manufacturing & Assembly has grown increasingly prominent. Considering that the space business is limited by the access to space, numerous industrials, start-ups and agencies have embraced new ideas, capitalizing on in-space services, robotic assembly and manufacturing for forthcoming space missions. Many of these initiatives focus on constructing structures of significant scale (exceeding the dimensions of current launcher fairings), envisioning possibilities such as Space-born antennas or large infrastructures for climate change. At Summit 24 the presentation will be focused on the needs and current capabilities of In-Space Manufacturing. Thermoplastics are good material candidates to comply with stringent requirements such as processing temperatures, automation, strength, thermo-elastic stability, compatibility with space environment and recyclability. As a matter of fact, recycling is not just a goal; this is the foundation of a new space ecosystem based on circular economy. Considering that each kilogram launched from Earth has a significant cost, the best material to use in space is the one that is already in situ. What is the impact of manufacturing and build-to-build variations on the aerodynamic performance and aero-mechanical response of multi-stage axial compressors? What approaches should we use to model them for industrial applications, as part of the design process and to support engine development tests? Next week, at #ASME #TurboExpo2024 I'll answer these questions, and provide some of our experience by sharing some the work we carried out at Siemens Energy, together with my co-authors Senthil Krishnababu CEng, FIMechE, FHEA and Simon Jackson. I'm looking forward to some good discussion with the audience! 💡 GT2024-122636: Manufacturing and Build Variations Modelling for Multi-Stage Axial Compressors: CFD Aerodynamic Predictions 📅 Date: Friday, June 28, 8:00 AM - 10:00 AM 🌐 Link: https://lnkd.in/eF9V3H32 💡 GT2024-125093: Manufacturing and Build Variations Modelling for Multi-Stage Axial Compressors: Forced Response Predictions 📅 Date: Wednesday, June 26, 4:00 PM - 5:30 PM 🌐 Link: https://lnkd.in/eqrJaude This work was also the starting point of a research collaboration with the University of Lincoln, Lincoln AI Lab (LAIL) and Sepehr Maleki , in which we are exploring the use of machine learning to predict the effect of manufacturing and build variations on the compressor aerodynamic performance.
