When should you reach out to potential sponsors? The earlier the better! This gives you a chance to maximize the sponsorship opportunity for them (think multiple emails to attendees leading up the event with their name). Depending on the size of the company, it can take time to get an answer too.

We've discussed the importance of knowing your audience for effective sponsorship, but when it comes to #sponsor partnerships, understanding who your sponsor partner is holds immense significance. Here's why:   - Develops trust - Creates Legitimacy - You'll stand-out   Many times, sponsorship seekers are looking for any business or organization that will support them.    Understanding the products, services, and history of a potential sponsor develops trust, allowing you to demonstrate that you are a solution to their needs.   The more information you have, the more legitimate you become as a partner because you have taken the time to understand who they are. By taking the time to understand who your potential sponsor is and what they do as an organization, you will separate your property from other sponsorship sellers.   So, before your first conversation with a potential new sponsor, do your homework and know who they are.

The question I've been asked most by CMOs, beside "How did this guy get in here?" is "If I have another dollar to spend, why should I spend it on sponsorships?" It's a fair question. And when it was asked 20 years ago, the answer was most likely a lot more art than science. Today, you can justify a sponsorship spend with any number of different tools that will measure effectiveness and efficiency of spend, ROI and other performance metrics. But, don't forget the art. When you're evaluating sponsorship opportunities, it's important to look at the qualitative aspects of the partnership. Does the property have a good reputation for servicing their sponsors? Does their mission match yours? Are the brand attributes of the property and the sponsor aligned? Who are the other partners? Would you want to be in business with them? Because in a very real sense, you are. Does the property stay on the back pages and off the front pages? So, the next time the CMO asks you that question, be prepared with the art and the science. And if you aren't prepared for that, make sure you have someone by your side who is.
