THE DIFFERENCES WE MAKE As this new year begins, and so many folks are starting new jobs, getting promotions, receiving awards, beginning new assignments (myself included) - ask yourself these questions: Who are the five wealthiest 💵 people in the world?
Who are the last four Heisman🏆 trophy winners?
Name the last three winners of the Miss America pageant 👸🏻.
Name five people who have won the Nobel or Pulitzer Prize 🏅. List the last five Academy Award winners for best actor.
Name the last decade’s worth of World Series winners…in order 🥴. How did you do? The point is this…none of us remember the headliners of yesterday. Yes, it’s true that these aren’t second-rate achievers (they’re the best in their fields)…but the applause 👏 dies, awards tarnish, achievements are forgotten, and accolades and certificates are buried with their owners 🪦. PICK YOUR BATTLES I have observed that a few people (especially at work) try to prove their point by arguing about every item on the agenda. They want to be in charge of everything, or at least most of it, that helps them or their teams. This used to get more heated in discussions about nominations for promotions, awards and recognition, appraisals, other benefits, etc. One of the grooming lessons I learnt was to not put up a fight in every situation. We should be selective in the battles we fight. Lessons learned in life: It's acceptable to lose some of the fights. #corporateexperience #lifeexperience #originalcontent

Kindness in the workplace - why is it important? I remember first joining EDSA, Inc. over four years ago. I was only about a year and a half into my career and the idea of working for such a prestigious firm actually scared the 💩 out of me. About 6 months into my new job, I somehow (literally don't know how) found myself having to present, along with a couple of my colleagues, a concept to our Board of Directors. I was petrified. I practiced my section of the presentation over and over and over, until it was finally time. I basically blacked out during it. But once it concluded, all of leadership gave us a standing ovation. Now looking back on it years later, the presentation was really nothing groundbreaking. Our visuals really weren't up to par (for a design firm at least), I stumbled through half of what I was saying and I'm pretty sure they could see the sweat dripping off my palms. Even with all of that, leadership STILL decided to show their appreciation with an over-the-top kudos. That act of kindness has since fueled my professional growth. It's what helped me stop with my imposter syndrome. It got me out of my shell. It's led to me getting promoted twice. It's how my company gained my loyalty. So, why does kindness matter? I talk about this all the time when I talk about the care and keeping of volunteers. One currency that everyone can use, regardless if employee/volunteer status, is appreciation! Live in the moment. As professionals (specifically pointing at myself here) it’s so easy to get stuck in the challenges or caught up in reaching for the next achievement, that we take way too little time to live in the moment and fully appreciate the work that we’ve done or the challenges we’ve overcome to actually achieve our goals. Instead of celebrating our successes, we shuffle on to the next big thing to check off the list. Challenging you (and mostly me) to take a step back on this Wednesday and remember who you were when you started your career vs who you are today. Honor the bumps in the road and celebrate the wins no matter how big or how small. There’s a good chance when you compare and contrast, you’ll find out you’re actually killing it. And if you aren’t too happy with the person you’ve become (don’t worry, we’ve all been there) take this time to get REALLLL clear on the person you want to be and map out the plan to be them. Xoxo 🤍

When we excel in our career, we should celebrate.
