We just released a new report on Using Psychological Science to Understand and Fight Health #Misinformation This is a consensus report for American Psychological Association and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention from a team of misinformation experts on why people believe and spread misinformation We offer 8 recommendations: 1) Avoid repeating misinformation without including a correction. 2) Collaborate with social media companies to understand and reduce the spread of harmful misinformation. 3) Use misinformation correction strategies with tools already proven to promote healthy behaviors (e.g., counseling, skills training, incentives, social norms). 4) Leverage trusted sources to counter misinformation and provide accurate health information. 5) Debunk misinformation often and repeatedly using evidence-based methods. 6) Prebunk misinformation to inoculate susceptible audiences by building skills and resilience from an early age. 7) Demand data access and transparency from social media companies for scientific research on misinformation. 8) Fund basic and translational research into the psychology of health misinformation, including effective ways to counter it. I'm very excited to share the results of our new #umbrella review on the effects of #climatechange and air #pollution on #mental health. In "Impact of air pollution and climate change on mental health outcomes: an umbrella review of global evidence" we synthesize the evidence coming from 32 systematic reviews with meta-analysis including 284 individual studies. Air pollution, rising temperatures, and extreme changes in weather patterns are elements of a severe global crisis that humanity is currently facing. While they are recognized as potential threats to physical health, their impact on mental health has only received attention in recent years, and a comprehensive quantitative analysis of existing evidence has been lacking. This study aims to fill this gap by identifying 237 unique associations, with their certainty graded according to international criteria. We hope that this study will help finding evidence-based targets to ultimately inform future research and population health actions. What’s the link between enactment and mental health outcomes? Tim Campellone, PhD, VP Translational Science, is presenting the findings today at Society of Behavioral Medicine's Annual Meeting. What’s enactment? The extent to which the techniques learned are applied in daily life. The analysis presented in the poster found that those who used Woebot for Adults and reported higher levels of enactment were more likely to be active in the app after 4 weeks than those who reported enacting “very little” or “not at all”. Why does this matter? In a separate 8-week, single-arm trial using a study app (Woebot for Mood & Anxiety), those who reported higher levels of enactment had, on average, greater improvements in depressive symptoms. How can clinicians ethically integrate psychedelic medicines when treating mental health? That question is at the core of a consensus report published in June by JAMA Network Open. The answers were developed during a 2023 multidisciplinary meeting of experts and interested parties, who came to a consensus on 20 key points across five ethical issues. I was honored to represent ORTUS Foundation at this 2.5-day meeting. This is both a hopeful and crucial moment in the history of mental health. Clinicians and policymakers must take the challenges ahead seriously. We must also keep focus on the rich cultural histories and traditions that inform contemporary medical uses of psychedelic medicines. NADD’s 41st Annual Conference in Tempe, AZ, October 7-9, 2024 will include Inequities and Outcomes Among People with Dual Diagnosis. This presentation will share results of an analysis of data from the 2022-2023 National Core Indicators-IDD In-Person Survey of race and ethnic disparities in assessment and diagnosis among individuals with IDD who have a Mental Health Condition diagnosis or who experience behavior challenges, controlling for other relevant personal and demographic characteristics such as living arrangement, state of residence, level of disability and more. Implications for practice and policy will be discussed. 😠 The DEA, yet again, trying to hinder research for mental health... Ok - that was the bad news. The good news - the DEA has scheduled a hearing to gather more feedback on its proposed ban of two psychedelics - DOI and DOC.  The DEA insists that these psychedelics have high abuse potential and no established medical value.  Considering the MDMA decision should be coming in August, it will be interesting to see how the DEA defines psychedelics moving forward.  Article quote: "For DOI and DOC, the agency’s 2023 notice about the scheduling proposal still lacks evidence that directly connects the compounds to serious adverse health events or demonstrated a high abuse potential." 🤞 Fingers crossed researchers (at least!) have access to these compounds.  Full article in the comments.
