In the episode, ECSP’s Claire Doyle and Angus Soderberg interview Dr. Yvonne Su, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Equity Studies at York University in Toronto. Dr. Su challenges oversimplified portrayals of displacement by drawing out how socioeconomic status, identity, and timeframes shape experiences of migration and draws attention to local grassroots organizations as pivotal players in addressing the challenges of climate migration. This is quite interesting and informative. It at least partly explains why action on climate change has been slow to happen. How do you talk about climate change? As someone who writes about climate change every day, I know how challenging it can be to get the message right. That's why it was such a joy to learn from Elias Kühn von Burgsdorff, Gabrielle Cesvet, Brent Kerrigan and the Apolitical community today. Here are three things I learned: 👩🌾 Make your audience the protagonist of the story Make sure you understand their situation and then show it. Doing so also allows you to position them as change-makers rather than someone change just happens to. 📊 There's always a more interesting story than degrees and stats Science communication must rely on science. But one degree more or less doesn't intuitively mean a lot to most people. Because climate change will impact everyone, you can always find a more meaningful story that's worth telling. 🤼 Not everyone wants a war Military metaphors can alienate people who are already overwhelmed or are just not up for 'combatting climate change'. Instead, focus on why it's meaningful to take action. It's often about community, love and health.
