Marketing vs. public relations from the ultimate band geek 🤓 I get this question all the time: “What’s the difference between Marketing and Public Relations? And can I have one without the other?” Let’s revisit my days as a bonafide band geek to shed some light. For reference, I’m highly qualified as I used to play piano, bass guitar, trumpet, and french horn—I even did a stint as a flagcore girl in the marching band (but we’ll use that analogy for another post on SALES!) Let’s start with marketing, which ensures that your brand's story is effectively communicated across multiple media channels, tailored to your audience's preferences. If your brand is the conductor of a symphony orchestra, marketing is the various instrumental sections. Just as a conductor requires each section to follow the sheet music and play in sync for the crowd, your brand relies on marketing for overarching brand awareness and continuous touchpoints with your audience. Now, let's shift our focus to Public Relations, which operates within only a few select media channels (cue the french horn section). The goal is to build credibility, trust, and a positive reputation with your target audience. It achieves this by fostering genuine interest in your brand and encouraging third parties to share your story organically. In our symphony analogy, PR can be likened to a grand solo, like the french horn excerpts in the Star Wars theme. These are iconic sounds that defined the soundtrack, and audiences immediately think of Princess Leia when they hear those famous notes in C Major. When it comes to marketing and PR, you need both to create an iconic soundtrack, especially one that is played on repeat.
