The Amsterdam-based fermentation startup, Farmless, has raised a €4.8 million seed round co-led by World Fund and Vorwerk Ventures, with participation from Revent. The company, which brews planet-friendly, functional proteins with a complete amino acid profile, will use the funds to build a pilot protein brewery in Amsterdam, develop its fermentation platform, and continue the process of regulatory approval. "If we unlock the protein-producing powers of the microbial kingdoms, we can create a future worth getting excited about," commented Adnan Oner, Founder & CEO of Farmless. 🍄 Mushrooms incoming 🍄 Most people are familiar with plant-based alternatives to meat and diary and the innovations in the field of lab-grown meat. Cell-cultured chicken is being sold in Singapore, and was cleared for human consumption by the US FDA in 2022. A third exciting category is mycelium. Mycelium is the stuff mushrooms grow from and trees communicate through. Mycelium can be an alternative for meat, dairy, textile, leathers and packaging. It is the one to watch and investors are scrambling to get on board. European companies working in the space raised 136% more in funding last year compared to 2022, with $87m secured Sifted reported. #NC-based Elo Life Systems secures $20.5million in series A2 round funding. The round was jointly led by DCVC Bio and Novo Holdings. They are joined by Hanwha Next Generation Opportunity Fund, AccelR8, and Alexandria Venture Investments. Elo has raised a total of $45 million to date. This latest round of #funding will help the company further scale and commercialize its sweetener product; increase its #molecular-farming pipeline of healthy and sustainable ingredients; and expand its crop protection and #productivity efforts, including work to save the banana from extinction. Elo’s first molecular-farming product is the “holy grail” of sweeteners – a natural, monk-fruit derived #sweetener that is 300 times sweeter than sugar without #calories.
