✨ How to Quit Your Job With Class I want to share this with you because this post really moved me. We often see posts on LinkedIn announcing a new opportunity or a departure from a job. I believe Alex’s post here is exemplary as he announces his departure from a position he held for 4 years. I worked with Alex for 3 years during my adventure in the automotive industry. For 3 years, he was there when I arrived at work, and he was still there when I left. Right after shelter-in-place, when we didn’t have a detail department, our GM, Alex, rolled up his sleeves and washed cars with his sales team. Because I know how dedicated he was to his job, I also know how difficult this decision must’ve been. Yet, in his post, I only see gratitude, courage, and grace. The pictures he included show a servant leader who cleaned the showroom floor himself, dressed up for Halloween to pose with his team, and led the store by example rather than words. We seldom see leaders like him. A truly great boss is hard to find, difficult to leave, and impossible to forget. Alex is not only the smartest person I met in the automotive industry but also the best boss I’ve ever had. Starting the week off with this loaded quote from Mercedes technical director James Allison, after Hamilton’s historic win at the British GP this past weekend, following a difficult 2 plus years for Mercedes. “The car,” he says, “is just the outcome of the institutional approach to designing a car. Everything about being competitive is about valuing the right things, putting resource onto the right things and then pursuing those right things with vigour. The car just pops out at the end as a consequence of that.” What are you focusing on in your teams, departments and overall organizations? Are you obsessed with the end product so much that you forget to take care of the inputs (good things e.g. right teams, culture, values, processes, talent management, rewards, quality management, sourcing, tech etc) that go into creating that great end product?

Is Mazda North American Operations the new New Balance? Gen-Z are loving (vintage) Mazda's. But it doesn't seem like Mazda is ready to take advantage. This week in GOOD THINKING (link in my bio) I wrote about how “A hot car for people in their 20s is a Mazda Miata that you can then modify and have fun with." Nissans and Hondas are cool too. But one quick look at their socials and brand experience and it's evident that none of the brands are ready to attract Gen-A / Gen-Z fans the way they could. They aren't stan accounts. Every post is about the current line (logical but misguided). There is such a big opportunity here. As luxury brands have learned from dupes, people want entry-level ways to engage with the brand (that's why there are so many luxury brand coffee shops and hotels opening). Mazda, Honda and Nissan Motor Corporation have an opening. The window is there and they should make it a door.
