✈ Decarbonizing the #aviation sector will require large investments to deploy sustainable aviation fuels (#SAF). Financial mechanisms can help direct investments and narrow the cost gap between traditional fossil jet fuel and SAF. In Europe, a new scheme aims to shrink this cost gap using funds from the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS), the continent’s carbon market.    The new re-investment mechanism sets aside 20 million allowances for aircraft operators to offset the higher cost of SAF production and rewards fuels according to their climate benefits.  🌍🌿 E-kerosene will receive 95% of the cost differential after taxes on fossil fuel while other SAF pathways receive between 50 and 70% of the cost differential.     We estimated how this mechanism can close the cost gap between fossil jet and e-kerosene.  Learn more: https://lnkd.in/dpGsD977    #efuels #SAF #emissions #climate #aviation #fuels

✈ There's a lot of talk about blending #SAF in #aviation as part of the effort to reduce emissions. However, the current share of around 0,5% is lagging expectations and much more is needed to ramp up investments and production. Today SAF is 2.7 times as expensive as #jetfuel and that won't change anytime soon. New: Global flight activity surpassed its pre-pandemic peak recently, putting the focus on jet fuel demand which continues to lag. Analysts expect aviation fuel demand to hit a record only later this decade, if at all, as newer planes have helped lift the global fleet's efficiency and cut fuel consumption.
