Typical of the start of a new year. The boardrooms are right now busy, with managers taking turns to make presentations and justify budgets while decision-makers, head-buried, remain worried about which of the options makes the most business sense. It is very likely that this expectation will be extended to investments in CSR, hence this short piece. The question of whether investments in CSR initiatives will or should make business sense or not is quite a tricky one, although the prevailing narrative suggests an emphatic "yes." Decision-makers need to understand that, unlike other areas of the business, sustainability is an investment in the future. This means the gains that are sought are hardly in the immediate but lurk behind several other factors that create an enabling environment for businesses to thrive. The years post-COVID have proven that we live in an era where environmental consciousness has stopped being a fad. Businesses that integrate environmentally friendly practices often find themselves reaping long-term benefits; from cost reductions through energy efficiency to improved brand reputation, the economic implications are endless. Consumers too, have become more aware, with most gravitating towards businesses that demonstrate a commitment to sustainable values. But even looking away from consumer optics, investing in CSR initiatives helps a great deal. Companies that adopt sustainable practices and go further to invest in CSR initiatives not only navigate regulatory landscapes more effectively but also appeal to a growing workforce that prioritizes ethical employment. I’m hopeful these few paragraphs will come in handy when next conversations about profitability and sustainability come up, as I am sure it will. Photo: Google

Key Insights: ➡ Sustainability in Focus: According to Dr. Rebecca Gooch at Deloitte Private, 46% of family offices worldwide are engaging in sustainable investing, up from 42% in 2021. ➡ Regional Leaders: Europe leads with 57% of family offices investing sustainably, followed by Asia Pacific at 52%. ➡ Growing Trend: The UBS Global Family Office Report for 2024 found that 57% of family offices with operating businesses consider sustainability in their long-term strategies. From my experience working with high-net-worth individuals and family offices, I see that this trend is driven by a commitment to creating positive environmental impacts while achieving robust financial returns. Sustainable investing isn't just a trend; it's becoming a cornerstone of modern wealth management. By aligning investments with environmental values, family offices are not only preserving their wealth but also paving the way for a greener future. Our Lead Analyst, Alex Hillman contributed to the Finding Nature newsletter considering the role of being a "maverick". "Corporations can be hot-beds for group think. Large organisations normally become large over multiple decades, so no matter how much they talk about being agile and innovative - they thrived in the world as it was, but may not thrive if the world changes. So they resist change and at times outright ignore reality. Taboo topics are often ignored. At the individual level, there’s a huge opportunity for people to take bolder stances in their careers. I’ve dealt with thousands of clever people in influential positions. It would be amazing to see more of them speaking up in their workplaces, criticising superficial and self-serving justifications for business as usual, promoting issues they care about, quitting jobs that they don’t believe in, and taking the risk of moving into different sectors or organisations that are genuinely helping. I’d love to see more institutions being bolder. Institutions, including companies and institutional investors, are hugely powerful in our society and without their support, making change is cumbersome, if not infeasible. Do you want the good news or the bad news? There's both in this The Wall Street Journal article earlier this week that said, "Some CFOs are devoting more resources to the areas of the business generating those higher short-term returns, resulting in a smaller ESG team or people incorporating ESG into their roles in lieu of positions wholly devoted to it." Incorporating #sustainability into more corporate roles (rather than having only dedicated sustainability roles driving #ESG) is a good thing--that's part of how sustainability gets truly integrated into a company and how you create a #sustainabilityculture. One of my #corporatesustainability objectives at GHD is to have as many different roles and functions across the business leading different sustainability efforts. I make sure they're coordinated with each other and aligned with our enterprise sustainability strategy, but I don't own them--other colleagues (who don't necessarily have "sustainability" or "ESG" in their titles) have accountability for them. The bad news in this article is the regression back to a focus on short-term returns--isn't that how we created these crises of #climatechange, #waterscarcity, #biodiversityloss, #modernslavery, etc., in the first place? One of the benefits of working for an #employeeowned company is that we're mostly isolated from the short-term investor perspective that often exists in the public markets because our shareholders are in it for the long-term. And at GHD, specifically, our shareholders / employees are aligned behind our GHD Sustainability Way, which includes a principle on "Generational value creation: Prioritize long-term social, economic and #environmental value over short-term gains for lasting #communitybenefit."

Over the past two decades, Nordic companies have outperformed their global peers on value creation, delivering an average annual TSR of 11.6 percent, surpassing the global average of 9.4 percent as well as averages in the United States (10.3 percent), Asia (9.4 percent), and Europe (7.6 percent). On the other hand, Nordic companies have been slightly trailing global peers in terms of growth. McKinsey has analyzed 311 Nordic firms spanning 11 industries, drawn from a sample of the world’s top 10,000 public and private companies. We discovered not only what’s driving these companies’ successes but also how they might reach even greater heights, spurring growth and generating a host of new Nordic champions.
