We need a unified legal framework like Delaware's in the US to simplify startup processes and attract global investors. Introducing English early in education will also help unify our market, enhancing competitiveness. Let's take inspiration from India, where standardization and infrastructure reforms have accelerated growth. Why I Chose Estonia for My Holding Company and became an e-resident in 🇪🇪 : A Digital Entrepreneur's Perspective In 2022 I partnered with Silva Hunt to open a holding company in Estonia and become an e-resident there, and Estonia keeps developing at a rapid growth since than, announcing great plans! As you may know, Estonia is at the forefront of digital governance and is rapidly moving towards becoming a 100% digital society by the end of 2024. The article highlights Estonia's transition into the "post-digital era," where people expect proactive, personalized, transparent, and trustworthy government services. Estonia is leading the way in meeting these expectations by providing a unique "Personal Government" experience. Great write-up by Andreas Klinger on what Europe needs to succeed in tech I agree with him that Europe is on a clear path to fall from #1 to #4 in the world (behind the US, China, and India). But, we are not as doomed as US people like to say, and we can turn the direction. False myths: 1️⃣ Europeans don’t work hard enough Eastern Europeans work harder than Americans. Even Italians work more hours than Americans. Also, working more hours doesn't correlate with achieving actual results. Greece and Italy work much more hours than the Netherlands but have stagnated much more. 2️⃣ Europeans lack the risk mentality 1/5 of all US unicorn founders are European. If they’d want to avoid risk so much why risk so much, go to another country and start a business? Mentality, such as risk-taking, isn't genetic. It comes from the system around you, and we can improve that in Europe. 3️⃣ European life is too comfortable, and you need hardship to succeed By large most tech successes in the US are from Standford and Harvard graduates and the likes. People who got their first sizable investments from wealthy parents and friends and didn't need to worry about a salary in the early days of their venture. 4️⃣ Taxes are too high in Europe Taxes in California are not that far from the EU average, and several European countries have lower taxes. 💡The real European problem is friction To succeed in tech and startups, you need to move fast, and even just a bit more friction every day means falling behind your global competitors and possibly being pushed out from the market. His two proposals? 1️⃣ Make an EU inc. on the model of Delaware Inc. in the US. In the US, investing in the early stages is straightforward and fast and does not require lawyers, thanks to standardised SAFE and the like. In Europe, you need to know regulations for each of the 30+ countries, hire lawyers to make even a small deal. The losers in all of this are local founders, who can't turn to global investors and get lower valuations. The key is really "standardization". It's fine to regulate more than the US, but rules must be harmonic in the EU (and possibly Europe). 2️⃣ Teach English starting at the earliest school classes Well, this goes by itself. 🚀👀 WAKE UP, EUROPE! It’s Time for a Change! Look, I’m just going to say it: too many folks in Europe are sleeping on the reality of our economic situation. Everyone’s all in on discussions about climate, immigration, and the war in Ukraine — important, yes — but who’s stopping to ask why EVERYTHING we use is made in China or runs on American software? And the proud Europeans move? More and more regulations on U.S. tech. We have become the continent of meetings, eurogroups, events, discussions and presentations! But think about this: What if we flipped the script? What if we cut down the red tape and actually empowered our European entrepreneurs to stay, build, and boom the economy right here? Imagine the impact on our GDP! I’m here in Europe, talking to people every day, and this isn’t even on their radar! Meanwhile, innovation is crazy across the U.S. and China. We’re stuck in a loop of complaining about the cost of living going up, yet many point fingers at the wrong issues. You bring up GDP stagnation, and people get touchy, asking why it’s all about the money. But here’s the ugly truth: Europe’s made it too tough, TOO SLOW to start a business, raise capital, and chase the big rewards. Why bother here when you can set up a company in Delaware, raise funds in the U.S., and even hit an IPO there? And why don’t we have any trillion-dollar companies in Europe? Why are there no European giants in the top 10? For example Stripe could’ve been a European legend, but no, it’s an American company. My very recent project in e-Estonia was updating the messages and the story, how to introduce e-Estonia to an international audience. You might know that Estonia has a long history as a digital pioneer, giving birth to #skype and many successful startups, and facing the world's first cyber war. But here's the thing, Estonia's digital journey is ongoing and we have entered the post-digital era - e-Estonia is now beyond digital. If I were to represent Digital Nation as a company to our partners worldwide, I'd say: "Building a digital society is a team sport." Using Estonia as an example, building a digital nation shouldn't only involve internal stakeholders, but require international collaboration. Therefore, new narratives are very relevant, right? It will be six months next week since di:ga became employee-owned. It feels like the change is now gathering pace. As a founder, when you sell a business, you sell a part of yourself. It’s empowering, exciting, and also daunting: a loss and a gain at the same time. You give up autonomy, but by taking the employee-ownership path, you gain a team that really has skin in the game, and starts to think differently as a result.  I am really proud of my co-owners for being willing to step up; embrace the challenge and the opportunity; ask – and help answer – the important questions; and critically, keep alive the values that motivated me to set the business up in the first place: the desire to use language to make a difference, to help solve some of the world’s thorniest problems, to realise the potential of great projects run by amazing, informed people. I’m not leaving di:ga any time soon. I’m working with others on this transition, and on continuing to grow and improve our offer to clients, while ensuring we can all have a good work-life balance and feel inspired and energised by what we do. With elections coming up in the UK and beyond, real momentum around key issues like international financial reform and responsible tech, and huge challenges for rights and safety we’ve got a full agenda to work on. 🔝 6, Lessons from Brazil - A Journey of Learning and Growth 🌎 I recently returned from an insightful trip to Brazil, where I had the privilege of visiting several clients and observing the vibrant business landscape firsthand. It was a busy time, and I intentionally stepped back from my usual LinkedIn posts to focus on the experience. Now, I’m excited to share some key takeaways from this journey. *Lessons Learned:* 1️⃣ Resourcefulness in Emerging Markets: Brazilian executives are incredibly resourceful, a trait that has only strengthened post-pandemic. Despite challenges, there’s a palpable energy in São Paulo’s business scene, with full offices and a strong commitment to innovation. 2️⃣ Embracing New Technologies: From AI to advanced logistics, Brazil is rapidly adopting new technologies. The prevalence of AI among professionals, even older generations, is impressive. The country’s tech adoption is accelerating, positioning it as a potential global tech hub. 3️⃣ ESG Commitment: Companies in Brazil are genuinely committed to Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles. In many cases, they’re leading the way, surpassing even some US companies in their initiatives and authenticity. 4️⃣ Geopolitical Neutrality and Trade: Brazil’s neutral stance in global politics and strong trade relationships, especially with China, open doors for competitive products, like the growing market for Chinese EVs. This dynamic is helping to improve the quality of life for many Brazilians. 5️⃣ Multilingual Proficiency: There’s been a noticeable increase in the number of professionals fluent in multiple languages, including English, Spanish, Mandarin, and German. This linguistic diversity is enhancing Brazil’s competitiveness on the global stage. 6️⃣ Global Expansion and Success Stories: Brazilian companies are not just breaking the local bubble but are poised to become global players.
