Energy efficiency is key to success in creating decarbonised future

Tetra Tech Secures $73 Million USAID Contract to Enhance Energy Access in West Africa Tetra Tech, Inc., a prominent provider of high-end consulting and engineering services in water, environment, and sustainable infrastructure, announced today that it has been awarded a $73 million contract by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). The contract aims to increase access to affordable and reliable electricity across 18 West African countries. The South African government's post-2015 National Energy Efficiency Strategy (NEEDS) has several objectives, including: - Economic growth: Promote energy efficiency as a driver for balanced, sustainable economic growth - Job creation: Boost job creation - Technological innovation: Lead technological innovation - Energy security: Improve energy security by making better use of existing and new generation capacity - Environmental sustainability: Optimize resources to safeguard environmental sustainability - Competitiveness: Improve competitiveness by supporting users to reduce their energy intensity - Inclusive economic growth: Stimulate inclusive economic growth by releasing generation capacity to all citizens - Public buildings: Accelerate the rate of improvement in energy consumption per square meter in public sector buildings As the The Southern African Energy Efficiency Confederation (SAEEC) this document affirms the centrality of Energy Efficiency to South Africa's future. It has to be seen as one of the key pillars of a Just Energy Transition. This is an objective we continuously work towards with our members, partners and government.

There are more than 200 million people living in #SouthernAfrica, with a rapidly increasing population, and close to half do not have access to #electricity, so I am thrilled to share that over the next 5 years Chemonics International will be implementing the Power Africa Empower Southern Africa (ESA) program, funded by USAID. ESA will provide an opportunity to accelerate the connection to reliable electricity of more homes, businesses and institutions in the region, while also working to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the #energy sector by supporting cleaner electricity generation and #justenergytransition and increase energy sector investment in collaboration with local governments. This initiative seeks to create a sustainable, interconnected energy network that will significantly enhance energy security, boost economic growth, and support environmental goals in both regions. Project Overview: 1. Vision: Goal: To establish a robust green energy infrastructure linking Africa and Europe, promoting the use of renewable energy sources, and facilitating the transition towards a low-carbon economy. 2. Key Components: Solar Power Plants: Large-scale solar farms in the Sahara Desert, leveraging the region's abundant sunlight to generate vast amounts of renewable energy. Africa's energy demand in 2040 could be around 𝟯𝟬% higher than today. This is massive compared to the 𝟭𝟬% increase in global energy demand predicted by McKinsey. However, producing energy in Africa comes with high costs. African oil and gas assets are 𝟭𝟱-𝟮𝟬% more expensive to develop and operate and emit 𝟳𝟬-𝟴𝟬% more carbon than the global average.
