Modern media makes it possible for almost anyone now to give a Ted talk or be on stage at several symposia and events. It still amazes me today that some of the best minds we had in engineering were rarely on such a 'big' stage, either by their own choice or perhaps because they did not generate such levels of interest. In November, Ing. Dallara spoke in front of no more than 30 very lucky but also very passionate people seated at the Fiera di Bologna. Here Ing. Materazzi very openly and patiently speaks to a reporter from one of the towns in Cilento, and in particular is not afraid to tell things as they are, rather than saying things to please industry observers. It's nostalgic yet refreshing, since we trend towards a system of bigger is better: more clicks, wider audiences etc. Everybody seems to know who the F1 drivers are, while not so many people know who are some of the key figures who nurtured the racing and high performance car industry. This car was made of aluminum. Prior to that DeTomaso and his wife, the former Isabelle Haskell, had made only race cars, and in effect, with OSCA’s development testers, were working for OSCA. In 1959, they left OSCA and began to make cars under their own badge, either for F2 or Formula Juniors, or even, on occasion, F1. De Tomaso originally planned to build the Vallelunga, (named after a racetrack in Italy at which the roadster had some success), with aluminum coachwork, as a roadster with a removable hardtop but instead he put a coupe into production. A rare and interesting, if not rather obscure car produced from 1964 through 1967. Early Fissore bodies cars were aluminum over a backbone chassis. Much chassis and dynamics design and development came from Formula single seaters. It is estimated that 40-50 cars were produced. The Vallelunga body was a graceful design in keeping with its era, penned by the legendary Giorgetto Giugiaro. Visually, the Vallelunga resemble some other Italian performance icons like the Ferrari 250LM and Dino 206 as well as the Alfa-Romeo TZ and Giulietta SZ. FUN FACT: In some cars, it is important confirm chassis numbers with known historic files.
