While in the US I had the opportunity to attend the Responsible Quantum Technology Conference (second edition) at Stanford University. Mostly to see my extremely smart friend Eline de Jong change the world, but also to see what is happening in the Quantum Ecosystem and how it relates to what is happening in the AI space. Here are some key takeaways: 🇳🇱 The Netherlands – Relevant Player in the Quantum Computing R&D field * Highlighted multiple times, with key figures like Mauritz Kop setting up centers and Mark Brongersma present. * Integral part of the semiconductor value chain, showcasing significant investment in Quantum technologies. * The Dutch consulate's presence underscored the importance of international collaboration Tyrone Pater. 🌐 Europe vs. USA in Quantum Tech * Europe excels in quantum software and algorithms, while the US leads in hardware. * Scientists reference Intel’s article, predicting a “ChatGPT moment” in quantum computing within the next 1-2 years. * Major investments are flowing globally, with the USA, Canada, and China at the forefront of quantum adoption. Notably, Denmark stands out with the highest investment per capita, focusing on deeptech quantum labs in Copenhagen for LSH. 🎯 Investment & Focus Areas * The EU and individual European countries are making substantial investments. * To remain competitive, understanding the quantum value chain and forming strategic partnerships is crucial (Crucial question for the Netherlands: how do we strengthen our value chain position?). * There are three prevalent mindsets causing stagnation in funding: 1. Fear due to real risks – highlighted by China’s $20-30 billion expenditure. 2. Overly ambitious claims like curing cancer. 3. Current focus on AI with a wait-and-see approach till 2031, potentially stalling quantum tech progress. 🌐 Geopolitical and Defense Implications * Beijing’s long-term strategy poses a significant challenge for the US. Innovation ecosystems act as defense mechanisms, driving further innovation. * The US follows an industry-led supportive approach, while China adopts a government-led strategy, with concerns about the US’s short-term focus. The EU has amazing potential in quantum technology, but it's been like a sleeping giant, slow to harness this revolutionary field. Today, Google Quantum AI and Google.org are joining XPRIZE and the Geneva Science and Diplomacy Anticipator (GESDA) to launch XPRIZE Quantum Applications, a 3-year, $5 million global competition to apply quantum computing to solve real-world challenges. The competition, which kicks off today, aims to generate quantum computing algorithms that can be put into practice (today or in the future) to help achieve societally beneficial goals, like those described by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The competition is closely aligned with Google Quantum AI’s focus on building a large-scale, error corrected quantum computer, and developing useful quantum computing applications, and it builds on Google.org’s support for applying emerging technology to large, global challenges — especially as related to the SDGs.

The operational launch ceremony of the #OpenQuantumInstitute (OQI) is full speed ahead. Hosted by CERN, born at GESDA - Geneva Science and Diplomacy Anticipator, supported by UBS, the OQI enters its new, three-year pilot phase to help unleash the full power of #quantumcomputing for the benefit of all. Building on the joint effort of some 180 experts to date, the #OQI seeks to facilitate equal access to cutting-edge nascent technologies and to support the development of concrete quantum solutions aimed at achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). My brain is tired but happy after the European Quantum Technologies Conference 2023 🧠 I'm on my way from Hannover to Frankfurt before heading back to Helsinki. Anna and I have been immersed in #EQTC23 over the past few days, exploring ways to strengthen Helsinki’s position within the Quantum ecosystem in Europe. Before the conference, I had my doubts. Would we have to accept wishful thinking? Could Helsinki truly compete on the international Quantum stage? I'm happy to admit I was mistaken (phew!). It's clear that Helsinki Partners has an achievable task, since we can build on a strong Finnish foundation for Quantum. More on that later. Another nagging concern was whether I belonged at the conference. Well, surprise 😅, I was right where I needed to be. It's been emphasized multiple times that Quantum's future necessitates collaboration across industries, not just academia and business. Bringing storytellers like me into the fold is vital to demystify this complex topic that's more than science fiction. At the same time, we marketers have to pay attention to avoid creating new fairy tales about Quantum. As Dr. Gustav Kalbe, Acting Director of "Digital Excellence and Science Infrastructure" at the European Commission, eloquently stated during the first inspiring panel I attended, "Quantum is real and tangible; we need to show the public at large where we are to turn it into a thriving industry."
