This is the title of a new article by Giulia Di Giamberardino published today in Vogue Italia, in which Matteo Magnani from the Ellen MacArthur Foundation and Matteo Ward helped us clarify the "health status" of the ecological transition in the fashion industry. "What is lacking in Europe? The courage to make strong decisions to catalyze change. We shouldn't be afraid of conflicts of interest: we are living through a period of great crisis - two ongoing wars, economic, environmental, and energy emergencies - so I believe it is the right time to make choices that, although they may seem 'uncomfortable' in the short term, will guarantee the sustainability of the planet in the long term." The book “Story of a t-shirt” we co-wrote with the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations FAO is now available to download for free! The protagonist is called “Celestina”. A special t-shirt that, having woken up in a landfill, where it had been thrown away because of a small hole in the fabric, must find its way back home to its parents. To help Celestina in her quest, the children retrace the path that Celestina followed before being discarded, thus discovering all the steps of the supply chain and resources needed to make a t-shirt. The book is contains a series of activities and games that adults and children can do together to facilitate the creative recovery and reuse of damaged clothes. The activities will be launched as physical experiences in October 2024 on the occasion of World Food Day and will be brought to schools, stores and companies by WRÅD's education team. #Challengethestatusquo

Interesting data emerges from exchanges with students, often aligned with reports coming from the European Commission. For example, the European Environmental Agency tells us that about 60% of the fibers used by the fashion industry are synthetic, and we usually see this number reflected in the composition labels of the clothes worn by students we interact with. Today, we brought our training program to an Italian technical institute, where students have embraced WRÅD's mission to challenge the status quo, beginning with the analysis of something as familiar yet often overlooked as the labels on their garments. In today's class, 93% of the students were wearing clothes containing synthetic fibers, a number that unfortunately doesn't surprise us but once again underlines the importance of introducing legislative frameworks that are better aligned with the true needs of both human and non-human life. With WRÅD Education, we engage students in collective activities that foster the exchange of ideas and the development of critical thinking, always starting from the awareness that we cannot change what we do not see and what we do not know. Understanding what the composition labels of our clothes mean is a first step in the right direction.

Dagli scambi con gli studenti emergono dati interessanti, spesso allineati con i report che arrivano dalla Commissione Europea. La European Environmental Agency per esempio, ci dice che circa il 60% delle fibre utilizzate dall’industria della moda sono sintetiche e solitamente vediamo questo numero riflesso nell’etichetta di composizione degli studenti con cui ci interfacciamo. Oggi abbiamo portato il nostro training formativo agli studenti dell'istituto tecnico Scaruffi Levi Tricolore di Reggio Emilia, che hanno abbracciato la missione di WRÅD di mettere in discussione lo status quo, partendo dall'analisi di qualcosa di tanto vicino a loro quanto, spesso, sconosciuto: le etichette dei capi che indossano. Nella classe di oggi il 93% degli studenti indossava capi contenenti fibre sintetiche, un dato che purtroppo non sorprende ma che sottolinea nuovamente l’importanza della politica nell’introdurre framework legislativi realmente allineati con le esigenze della vita umana ed extra umana. Con WRÅD Education coinvolgiamo gli studenti in attività collettive che favoriscono lo scambio di idee e lo sviluppo del pensiero critico, partendo sempre dalla consapevolezza che non possiamo cambiare ciò che non vediamo e ciò che non sappiamo. Capire cosa significano le etichette di composizione dei nostri vestiti è un primo passo nella giusta direzione. E voi? Che mix di fibre state indossando in questo momento? In the past 2 years we have been increasingly involved and connected with the European Commission, and even if we can’t always influence the choices of a Creative Director in their studio or of a Marketing Manager in their agency we can, as citizens, vote and agenda that creates the right conditions and framework that can force them to act in a certain way. That’s powerful. June 9th EU elections. Go vote!

Matteo Ward & Alice Fortuna have spent the last few days in Brussels to participate in and lead a series of events as guests and collaborators of the European Commission. Matteo Ward, as Textile Expert for the New European Bauhaus Festival - the creative heart of the Green Deal - has guided the selection of 16 responsible designers including Tomohiro Shibuki and Victor-Hart™️ for an exhibition within the Art & History Museum (KMKG-MRAH) and presented the NEB Sustainable Catwalk. Alice Fortuna has been involved in a series of talks, panels and workshops hosted in the Parliament for Youth Week, an opportunity to strengthen our relationship and connections with the Commission and deepen our knowledge to support our partners in the creation of new cultural foundations to inform product and communication design, in line with the new guidelines and frameworks that Europe is establishing. __ Matteo Ward & Alice Fortuna hanno trascorso gli ultimi giorni a Bruxelles per partecipare e guidare una serie di eventi in qualità di ospiti e collaboratori della Commissione Europea. Matteo, in qualità di Esperto Tessile per il Festival del Nuovo Bauhaus Europeo - il cuore creativo del Green Deal - ha guidato la selezione di 16 designer responsabili, tra cui Tomohiro Shibuki e Victor-Hart™️, per una mostra presso il Museo d'Arte e Storia (KMKG-MRAH) e ha presentato la NEB Sustainable Catwalk. Alice è stata coinvolta in una serie di conversazioni, tavole rotonde e workshop ospitati presso il Parlamento per la Youth Week. Un'opportunità per rafforzare le nostre relazioni e connessioni con la Commissione e sostenere al meglio i nostri partner nella creazione di nuove fondamenta culturali per informare il design di prodotto e comunicazione, in linea con le nuove linee guida e legislazioni che l'Europa sta stabilendo.
