Exciting steps for climate action and music lovers alike! 🎶🌍 Massive Attack's ACT 1.5 was a bold statement about the future of live events and sustainability celebrating 25 years of climate activism by the band. Every event producer knows that the first event is a live test of the key idea. And the ACT 1.5 producers know that there is improvement to be continued. A massive challenge, executed with key partners, with scientific research informing decisions, creating momentum, standards and influencing policy. They've been working closely with climate scientists from the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research to develop the only Paris 1.5 compatible roadmap for decarbonising the live music sector. Being the first band to join the UN's Race to Zero programme and committing all their touring and production activities to Paris 1.5 compatible decarbonisation measures. And Liverpool, where the band had initially planned to prototype this event, has now become the first city globally to commit to a Paris 1.5 compatible carbon reduction standard for major live events, thanks to this initiative. And even more, they are working on influencing venues to green their supply chain. It's truly inspiring to see such an iconic band using their platform to drive real change. This is a huge step forward for sustainable live music! 🌱 Curious about the roadmap? What is the impact of touring and how can the music industry decarbonize its footprint? Massive Attack show how super-low carbon practices can be delivered, provided if they are central from the inception of a tour. They took a road map developed at Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research to target energy, food, waste and travel, as well as to show that it doesn't compromise on the audience leaving a concert happy. Powered by renewable energy, using low energy LEDs and batteries on site, harvest on pre-existing festival infrastructure, provide incentives for audience travel to travel by train and shuttle, have only plant-based food on offer (by local suppliers!) and leave with zero waste. Massive Attack shows how forward thinking can really make a big difference - while playing some of the best music ever made. Safe from harm. That's the way to set standards in music as well as in sustainability. Check the story at https://lnkd.in/g5MK2594

In 2019, Carly McLachlan, who directs the section of the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research located at The University of Manchester, UK, assessed the #carbon #footprint of Massive Attack’s touring practices and, in doing so, create an action plan to kick-start change across the live-music sector. In June 2021, McLachlan and her team published the Super-Low Carbon Live Music road map for the UK live-music sector. The 17-page report is one of the first attempts not only to assess the carbon costs of the UK’s live-music industry, but also to suggest clearly defined and measurable targets that the sector could work towards to meet the aim of the Paris #climate agreement to limit #global #warming to 1.5 °C. Massive Attack used the road map to deliver what the band hopes was the lowest-carbon concert of its size so far, and one that “fires a starting pistol for the music industry to embrace the multiple opportunities for change”, the band said in a statement. Using the targets in the road map, the band and Act 1.5 team introduced changes to how the event handled power, waste, travel and food. #science #research #music #environment

Massive Attack anuncia tour. El evento promociona algunas medidas “sin precedentes” hacia la descarbonización. “Live music must drastically reduce all primary emissions and take account of fan travel.” “This is precisely the type of transformative approach that we need to see more of in the live music sector and indeed every sector; one that has the collaboration and vision to reduce emissions across all areas of impact and working beyond the areas you directly control to unlock the systemic change we urgently need to deliver on our Paris Agreement commitments.” #decarbonization #music #climatechange https://lnkd.in/dh6YQrT9

Last week, I attended two brilliant events in Bristol: ecolibrium community gathering and Association of Independent Festivals (AIF) Congress. I thought I'd shout out about the following organisations, initiatives and resources I learned about: ecolibrium partners: Energy Garden: A not-for-profit Community Benefit Society that works with local communities to invest in renewable energy generation, green London’s transportation infrastructure, improve air quality and biodiversity, and empower communities and young people to take climate action. (Fun sidenote: We were gifted Energy Garden's limited edition beer, which was brewed with hops grown in their Finchley Central Station community garden. Cheers team!) Temwa: A tree planting project with the aim of combatting the effects of deforestation and climate change whilst also developing thriving, inclusive and self-reliant communities that are able to transform their own futures. Bristol Energy Cooperative: A community-owned energy cooperative, growing Greater Bristol’s local green energy supply. BEC develops renewable energy and energy efficiency projects, with and for the benefit of the community. AIF Congress: #FivePercentForFestivals: Many festivals have buckled under economic pressure, including #NASSFestival and #Leopollooza. AIF is lobbying the government to temporarily reduce VAT on music festival ticket sales from 20% to 5%. Easing the economic pressure on festivals will enable them to rebuild and recover post-pandemic. Festivals have an impact on the environmental. Julie's Bicycle and Event Vision:2025 have launched the 'Sustainable Materials and Waste Management Toolkit for Festivals' to support event organisers reduce the environmental impact of their events. (They will be sharing more on 7th Feb!) One last exciting resource is the #MoreThanMusic2024 Report. betternotstop surveyed 100 festivals, investigated their publicly available impact policies, gathered data, and shared conclusions on campsites, litter, food and drinks, energy, and social impact. Happy learning! #SustainableEvents #YouSmartThing #LifeIsATripOut #TechSolutions #Festival

Are you a professional performer? If yes, you have a unique platform to inspire and influence your audience. With great power comes great responsibility, and one of the most pressing issues of our time is sustainability. As performers, we often travel and tour extensively, which can have a significant impact on the environment. However, by making sustainable choices, we can minimize our carbon footprint and inspire our fans to do the same. Traveling and touring sustainably means choosing eco-friendly transportation options, such as trains or electric vehicles, staying in accommodations that prioritize sustainability, and supporting local businesses that share our values. But our responsibility doesn't end there. We can also use our platform to promote sustainability and inspire our fans to take action. Encourage your audience to carpool or use public transportation to attend your concerts and festivals. Offer incentives for sustainable behavior, such as discounted tickets for those who bring their own reusable water bottles or use eco-friendly transportation. There are many ways we can become creative to incentivize sustainable choices! By using our influence in a responsible way, we can create a ripple effect of positive change. Let's lead by example and inspire future generations to prioritize sustainability: https://lnkd.in/g2KPjQq6 #sustainability #performingarts #ecofriendly #responsibletravel #climateaction #music #performance
