A multidisciplinary team of researchers based at Yale will launch a series of studies aimed at accelerating understanding of bipolar disorder and generating new and more effective treatments. Together with Harvard University, Stanford University, and the New York Genome Center, Yale University will be one of four sites funded by $18 million in research grants from BD²: Breakthrough Discoveries for Thriving with Bipolar Disorder, a research funding initiative that brings together researchers, clinicians, philanthropists, and people with lived experience to study and treat bipolar disorder. Each site will receive grants of up to $4.5 million from the BD² Discovery Research program over three years to examine the fundamental mechanisms of bipolar disorder. "The unprecedented opportunities for researchers to perform this work in the context of the highly collaborative larger BD² network, we think, have potential to be transformative," said Hilary Blumberg, MD, John and Hope Furth Professor of Psychiatric Neuroscience and Professor of Psychiatry, and in the Yale Child Study Center and of Radiology and Biomedical Imaging. I'm pleased to announce that I have been granted funding through the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) at the University of Minnesota to begin research on cognitive profiles for the BRIDGES dataset through the RAD Lab in the Department of Psychiatry. My work will focus on analyzing fractional anisotropy of relevant white matter tracts using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) data, among other metrics, in adolescents assigned female at birth (AFAB) with Non-Suicidal Self Injury (NSSI). NSSI is common among adolescents and young adults, with lifetime rates ranging from 13-20%. The onset typically occurs around age 13 or 14 and is more prevalent in females. Previous research has shown that NSSI is linked to impairments in white matter microstructure and cognitive functioning, particularly in areas related to decision-making and attention. This study will examine the relationship between NSSI severity, neurocognitive deficits, and white matter microstructure using data from the BRIDGES study, which includes clinical neuroimaging and cognitive data from 164 adolescents AFAB. Our hypotheses include: 1. NSSI severity will be associated with deficits in decision-making and attentional processes. 2. NSSI severity will correlate with impaired white matter microstructure in emotion regulation-related tracts. 3. White matter impairments will correlate with neurocognitive deficits. The research will involve data cleaning, processing, and analysis under the supervision of Dr. Kathryn Cullen and her team. Results from this study could guide the development of neurobiologically-informed interventions for adolescents with NSSI, ultimately promoting their well-being. New research published in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry explores neural markers of suicide attempt using rs-fMRI. The study examines the relationship between inflammation markers, brain activity, and functional connectivity in patients with unipolar depression. AI data analysis maps three distinct brain aging patterns (National Institute on Aging (NIA), The National Institutes of Health) An AI-assisted analysis of extensive genetic, neurological, and cardiovascular data has revealed three distinct brain aging patterns and dementia risk outcomes, as detailed in a study published in JAMA Psychiatry. Conducted by an international team including NIA-funded researchers at the University of Pennsylvania, the study utilized over two decades of data from more than 27,000 participants. The team identified a normal aging trajectory (A1) and two accelerated aging subgroups (A2 and A3), particularly pronounced after age 65. The A1 group exhibited minor brain atrophy and fewer cardiovascular risk factors. The A2 group showed high levels of white matter hyperintensity and cardiovascular risk factors, with a brain age ahead of their chronological age by two to three years. The A3 group had widespread brain atrophy and faster cognitive decline, with a brain age three to five years older than their chronological age. These findings could enhance prediction and classification in Alzheimer’s research and precision medicine, with hopes of expanding the study to more diverse samples.
