With the exponential growth of battery management and monitoring applications, there is increased demand for high power current shunts that can handle bidirectional currents typically up to ±800A continuous with peak currents up to ±22400A @ 50ms. Such high power shunts are readily available and typically feature very low resistance values in the range 25uΩ to 100uΩ, in order to minimise self heating and power loss. The problem is that the output voltage of a 25uΩ shunt at 800A is only 20mV. Making a reliable connection to the voltage sense terminals and then amplifying this voltage and potentially also converting it to a digital signal represent additional challenges for Electronics Engineers. Measurement accuracy can be improved by including a temperature sensor on shunt, but this requires additional connections. In practice, people are mitigating the harmonics instead of just finding solutions to eliminate them. A VFD with a low THDi on both input and output eliminates the need for the costly and complex mitigations necessitated by ordinary drives. In order to address this challenge, we are taking advantage of the new generation of wide-bandgap (WBG) semiconductor technologies. Drives equipped with WBG metal-oxide semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFETs), deployed in active front end (AFE) architecture, meet the 5% limit under IEEE 519. Also, the true sine wave resulting from this technology eliminates all the drawbacks harmonics, or harmonics mitigation, usually cause. Our drives guarantee THDi under 5% both on input and output, complying with IEEE 519. This THDi rate allows the motor to work more efficiently and longer than with traditional VFDs. A PN junction diode is a fundamental component in electronics, formed by joining p-type and n-type semiconductors. The p-type semiconductor has an abundance of holes (positive charge carriers), while the n-type semiconductor is rich in electrons (negative charge carriers). At the junction of these two materials, an electric field forms, creating a depletion region that acts as a barrier to charge carrier movement. When a forward bias (positive voltage to the p-side and negative to the n-side) is applied, the depletion region narrows, allowing current to flow through the diode. This property enables the diode to conduct electricity in one direction, making it a crucial element for rectification, converting alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC). Conversely, when a reverse bias (negative voltage to the p-side and positive to the n-side) is applied, the depletion region widens, blocking current flow. This characteristic makes the PN junction diode useful in protecting circuits from voltage spikes by preventing reverse current.
