Don't ever tell me environmentalism is boring! The EU Nature Restoration Law has finally been passed, but not without a bit of controversy. By 2030, member states are required to restore at least 20% of their land and sea areas, with further milestones extending to 2040 and 2050. Why? Because in the last 50 years human population has risen by 107%, meat production 244% and co2 emissions by 146%. Can you imagine what our world will look like in the next 50 years if we don't take a stand? The NRL was unlikely to be passed until Austrian Environment Minister Leonore Gewessler made a commitment despite the opposition from her own government. Recently, the landmark Nature Restoration Law successfully passed through the EU Parliament, marking a significant step forward in Europe's response to the biodiversity crisis. However, one final step remains before full celebration can commence - within a few weeks all Member States must still confirm their support for this proposal. While this should theoretically be a mere formality, given that countries already voted on this law in November, the intricate nature of the EU legislative process necessitates that ENVI Ministers formally affirm their 'yes' vote once again. Why they should vote ‘aye’?   The core concept of the law is that merely conserving existing natural areas is insufficient – we must undertake large-scale restoration efforts. The goal of the law is to rehabilitate at least 20% of the EU’s land and sea areas by 2030 and all degraded ecosystems by 2050. It also establishes obligations and targets on different fields of action, such as farmlands, pollinators, rivers, forests and urban areas, to gradually reverse the environmental damage caused by climate change and unchecked human activity. It includes for example rewetting 30 % of drained peatlands by 2030, restoring 25,000 km of free-flowing rivers, tackling pollinator decline and increasing green spaces in cities. It all sounds familiar, as we've been hearing about these necessary measures for years now. However, what has been missing is a unified approach and full commitment from all EU Member States. For the first time, the NRL establishes clear guidelines along with a binding timetable. Therefore, the NRL emerges as a potent instrument for safeguarding Europe's natural heritage. Notably, it not only sets precise targets but also mandates regular monitoring. Member States will also have to adopt national restoration plans detailing how they intend to achieve these targets.  The vote for the NRL could mark a significant turning point for the EU, positioning it as a global model for proactive environmental policy. We know better; we have to do better. Moving forward with biodiversity preservation means fixing the problems that already exist, as well as preventing them to the best of our ability in the future. I can help you assess your bird-safe options on any project at any point of construction. The good news is that it’s *never* too late to make a building bird safe. We *know* that all structures kill birds unless they meet specific criteria. We need to move forward with the understanding that if we don’t build it right the first time, we’ll have to fix it later - which is more costly, and has more aesthetic limitations. If you have a building that isn’t bird safe, you can’t pat yourself on the back regarding biodiversity just yet, you have to practice what you preach first.

This Thursday, the European Parliament, Council, and Commission are expected to reach an agreement on the EU Nature Restoration Law. It is their last chance to set the law on the right track and ensure it can successfully tackle the devastating impacts of climate change and biodiversity decline. The stakes are extremely high ahead of the last negotiation meeting on 9 November. After the European Parliament’s attempt to severely weaken the law in its position in July, the negotiators have one last opportunity to ensure that several key elements find their way into the final text. One of the most important points is to secure quantified and legally binding targets for all key ecosystems, including agricultural ecosystems and peatlands. Restoring drained peatlands is a critical solution for climate mitigation and adaptation and must be part of the final law. The negotiated legislation is a crucial component of the von der Leyen Commission’s European Green Deal and is meant to be the EU’s key tool to implement the Global Biodiversity Framework. Failing to reach a meaningful agreement would put into question the EU’s fulfilment of both domestic and international biodiversity and climate commitments and above all, leave Europe’s citizens, economy, and environment extremely vulnerable to the immediate effects of climate change. The negotiations between the European Parliament, Council and Commission have so far been fast-paced and challenging. It is believed that the Council and Commission intend to find common ground between the more ambitious Council’s position and the weaker Parliament’s position. As there is no doubt about the urgency of the intertwined climate and biodiversity crises, the #RestoreNature coalition calls on all three institutions to reach a strong agreement that gives Europe a meaningful law, enabling large-scale nature restoration of key ecosystems. Since the Parliament’s concerns have been largely addressed during the negotiations, their full support is expected for the final text of the law. The final talks follow several months of unparalleled mobilisation in support of the first-ever EU law to restore degraded ecosystems. The #RestoreNature campaign partners gathered over a million signatures and messages from citizens demanding a strong Nature Restoration Law. At the same time, more than 6,000 scientists, 100+ businesses, and over 200 NGOs and numerous climate activists urged decision-makers to deliver this much-needed law.  #RestoreNature
